How far from Melb is it Mafia?
Cost me $900 for a 4WD from Mt Isa to Melb via Brissie if that helps.
That was through Toll I think.

For the ferry, it only needs to roll over the gangway as far as I know, perhaps you could save a few bucks by flipping over here on the ferry ($99 atm), and go back that evening with the mini ($61 + another $99 for you).

Come over say Friday evening, go back Saturday evening (Or the same day on a day sailing?)

All the car has to do is drive onto the boat, and then drive off at the other side. If it gets to melbourne on a trailer and rolls onto another trailer at the other end, it doesn't matter if it is registered or not.

I went through this last year when considering my own options with bringing a car back from Tasmania.

261 is a little cheaper than 1000 dollars...

When I went over a while ago they wanted to check that my car (HQ race car) was registered. There was a rebate from the government for passenger cars on the ferry. If it was not registered it was classed as freight and was charged at full price.
I got around this by getting a Vicroads "Unregistered Vehicle Permit" which is defacto registration.
Just check before you rock up in case the rules are still the same.

You would definately be better off driving it over for a trip on the ferry...if you have it transported it has to go through customs, so I was informed when I was getting quotes to ship a mini from Tassy to me....

They do go over the car as you roll onto the South Melbourne Pier. I reckon (and it is a common mistake) that you mean possible Quarantine Inspection. In this case It might be the feared Australian Quarantine Inspection Service perhaps?

They look for any food and vegetable matter which might damage the Apple Isle's apples and so forth.

Right, here is the plan!

Get the car to Melbourne, at $375

Me and the missus boat over to Melbourne, grab car, boat back for around $281 cause im a student ;)

Cheap. Sweet.

Thanks, I can stop worrying.

Now, what company to use to get it to the docks!

You can get the transport company to deliver it on the day to the docks, or have it delivered to someone's place the day(s) before and bring it down for you.

Option 3 would be to have it delivered to a local yard (tell 'em you want it a couple of days early to avoid stuff ups) and then go get it on the day.

I would reccomend option two or three if it is easy.

Right, just got off the phone to TNT, and they said $320.22 to melbourne.

I could fly tiger from hobart to melbourne, then to canberra, drive it back to Melbourne and boat back, but thats to much assing around, and with two people and a heap of luggage, cant be f'ed. oh and it would cost more, and I would need to get a permit to drive it etc.

wooooot im going to melbourne.

Thanks everyone :)
