Just need to polish up the intercooler pipe work now to make it really bling-bling (what can I say, I just like shiny stuff :) )

Well, update time.
Since whacking on the intercooler, ill need to mess with the mix/tuning.

Its either one of two (well, possibly three) things.
1. Blow off valve not being able to handle the extra boost properly. Its a metro turbo plenum with stock BOV, so in between shifts I think its not dumping enough and its slowing down the turbo...
2. A/F mix... I am almost certain that I am leaning out, will test tomorrow. Pulled the damper out of the carby (dashpot) and it was even worse (meaning its running lean)
Easy enough to sort out though.
3. Valves... yes, still having valve issues. I bent them before, and I think they are bent again... or at least leaking ... new stainless steel ones specific to my application have been ordered and will be made in a month or so...

Cheers,
Peter.

Oh: PS - The intercooler pipes are actually painted, they are not alloy...

1. I don't think this would be a major prob. Sure it will damage the impellor a little bit, but as for slowing down the turbo... IMO it's not that big a deal. The air still goes out, that's what the cool fluttering sound is.. like PFFFF-FFFFF-FFF-FFF-FF-FOO! In extreme cases you can spin the impellor right off the shaft and BANG! not cool...

2. I'd say lean out too. Adding an IC drop's the temps right down -- cooler air = denser charge which needs more fuel :)

3. Don't rev the nuts off it then

Oh you take the fun right out of it dont you! ;)
I dont, rev her much ... if Ben reads this he will laugh his tits off... we test drove her, and it was like "Yeah, goes good, she's ok" and I said, power is different now... he didnt realise I was only taking her to about 4700rpm hahahaha... over 5000 PHWOAR!

Im taking it easy though, until the head is 100% sorted.

Pete.

Haha. I'm so tempted to build one of these suckers! I've got 90% of the parts to do it -- 12G295, 1098 block, pistons, turbo, ic...

Sounds like it turns it into a little rocket 8)

Ok, another update.

Looks like its leaning out... as mentioned.
Put new ATF in the dashpot, and it improved... still a tiny flat spot but much better.

Will richen the mix a smidge and see how she goes...

When the new valves are ready and the guides k-lined Ill get a dyno tune done properly. Timing, A/F mix, everything...

Peter.

Can you give more information on these valves that don't bend please :)

Also if you were going to do this again with a scratch engine what would you do differently?
And the big ones, is turbo charging a 998 worth the gain? and how do you go next to a worked 1275?

This build has inspired me to dust off the 998 for my next build

Cheers,
Alex

Dont have specs on the valves, GR has someone making them... will know more soon.
They are stainless steel high grade race type valves... whatever that means.

The guides will be k-lined too.

If starting again? Lower compression and more boost, nothing else different.
Maybe I would get rid of the distributor like Ben has, and run a megajolt.

998 or 1100 turbo, both will keep a huge smile on your face.
Against a 1275 turbo? Dunno, never been up against one, I know you will be able to make more power 'easier' maybe will 1275... but if you break 1100 parts, they are cheap and easy to find, unlike 1275 parts.

Go on, dust off the 998 and run 8:1 compression and 12psi... amazing fun :D

Peter.

Having heard Grahams technical discussion about the k-lines (and bought them), i reckon that will go much further to stopping bent valves than the fancy shmancy stainless valves. for the small price per valve guide it is well worth it

good luck with it

Yep, k-lining for sure... soon as GR is ready.

In another update, we have a new problem.
Fuel pump decided to start leaking fuel.

Its a Holley Blue 14psi pump, and its coming out of the little hole on the body :(

Back to Holley it will go... hoping for a straight up replacement.

Plan is to whack on a 5-6psi Facet pump and disconnect the actuator - so no boost.
Otherwise, at 5psi ill lean out soon as I get on boost and do damage... I can handle no boost for a couple weeks.

On a good note! The Front camber kit is on. Rears will be on soon.
Its not setup how I want it to be, its just setup standard (and straight)

Negative camber coming soon ;)

Cheers,
Peter.

I highly recommend taking it to Greig Malaure to set up the adjustable supension to your requirements. He did wonders with mine. At least get him to send you to the alignment place.....

Ok, I have had another read through this thread and now I have a few more questions :)
1. What turbo are you using? Can you give us some info on it as well
2. Is the turbo the right size? would you go bigger or smaller?
3. Did you get any problems with blow by? or do you need to be running higher pressures for that...
4. Where did you plumb the oil return line to?
5. Does the engine overheat now?
