Don't be afraid of aerostart, it has a place and this is it.

If everything is in place and working, as you say, then squirting aerostart in the trumpets and giving it a hit on the starter should make it fire even at 13.1. Your not trying to make it run on aerostart just make it start.

It should cough, splutter and even run for a few seconds. If it backfires or spits back through the carbiw then thats a clue as well.

At least you have a clue as to where to start backtracking with aerostart.

Winding it over on petrol and getting nowhereis not helping you.

Mike

Check your avgas is avgas not jetfuel.

I know it sounds stupid but I know somebody else that did it.

"Check your compression with a guage, 50psi could feel like 150psi but the motor probably won't go,
also check vacuum lines, are you running a power booster for the brakes, check that yo're not loosing vacuum through that,
have you got the rubber o rings between the carby and the manifold and are they in good condition, has the carby been jetted for a mini?"

Compression approx 12.5:1 (if I remember)
No brake booster, no vacuum lines
New rubber mounts carb to manifold
Jetted correctly by expert Ken.

someone else can correct me on this, awhile ago i remember reading on here someone too the head off their mini and cleaned all the crud from the top of the bore and the top of the piston, they then lost ALOT of compression,

have you tested it yet, and have you dribbled some oil down the spark plug hole to raise the compression slightly,

Doing that on an old engine won't change compression, but can cause more oil burning in the short term.

Why Nick, that's all a bit public isn't it?

Oh, With Animal, I get it

Had a play yesterday, confirmed timing was correct, (timing set on harmonic balancer, not on flywheel) Carb working as intended, and power at coil & all good. Still no fire.

Ye olde' Lucas starter just doesn't spin her up fast enough, and is probably taking too much from the coil too. (drops to 9v at coil while cranking). We had it hooked up with Jumper leads, but no joy!

So, bled the brakes ready for a push down the hill, but ran out of time. My friend had taken his Race Mini out for a spin to run it in, (freshly built motor) and bent a valve. So focus was on that mini for the rest of the day!

Next update in a few weeks.

Thanks Everyone!

Matt

Woo Hoo!

All it took was a few big hills and being towed behind a friends Triton!

Animal positively roared into life! Still got some fine tuning to do, such as adjusting the idle, getting the timing right, etc. BUT ANIMAL RUNS!!!!

Still won't start on the Lucas starter, but the battery was at about 25% by then so it's charging again now!

Now to run him in properly and away we go!!

For those who were wondering why it wouldn't start, everything was good, carb, timing, compression. It was getting the right amount of fuel and air, spark at the right time,

it was just too weak a spark, as the lucas starter drained all the current, and turned the motor over like a 15 year old labrador chasing his tail!!

Push start, no worries! (OK, it was a big hill!)

Cheers & thanks

Matt

Glad to hear that it is finally going Matt. So I guess I'll see animal when you drive it to the meeting on Tuesday

Hopefully you can find a different starter with less current draw.

Update: 24 May 2008

Just so everyone knows the final verdict, I fitted one of convertiblemini's Bosch Gear reduction starter motors, (designed to fit with an oil cooler) and after 3 seconds of turning over, animal started under his own power!!!!

It really was exactly right, just the poor old Lucas sarter didn't have enough grunt.

The bosch starter (used on v6 commodores I think) spins the motor like a top, better even than the (new) 'gemini' starter I run on the blue deluxe!!!

Anyone with a high compression motor, look at getting one of these, best $300 I spent in a long while! (saved myself over 1/2 a kilo in weight too!)

Thanks everyone for your advice and help!

Cheers

Matt

Are these starters a drop in fit? Or moding required?
