Hi,

I'm Tahl from Melbourne's inner Eastern suburbs. I've never owned a Mini but always wanted to. That's about to change!

I'm researching madly so that I can purchase my first Mini in early 2009. It's going to be a project car - a real rescue job needing a full restoration. I'd really like to do as much of it as I can myself, but will doubtless handball some things on to the experts ;)

I'm still trying to decide what model to start with, but I'm leaning towards the Cooper S MkII. The car will be my daily driver, but I'd like to do some off-road and road rallying where I can. I don't really know what specs I'm after or how I can get the most out of my future Mini whilst still preserving the classic character I fell in love with way back when I was 16. Any tips, advice or personal accounts are greatly appreciated :D

Thanks to drmini who put me in touch with this forum,

Cheers all,

Tahl.

Yeah, you said it! I'm floundering in information at the moment. Whilst I've had old cars before, there's a big difference between changing your own oil and knowing where to start with a project like this.

I guess I'm extra wary because, being a woman, it's often hard to get taken seriously by mechanics ... and/or common to get taken for a ride. I want to make sure I know what I'm talking about before I plan anything. Hence this morning's reading includes cam shafts and valve timing, lol

Lol! I guess you have a point there.

Trust me, the search button is getting a thorough workout this morning. I'm currently researching upgrade options for the 1275 engine in the Cooper S MkII ... without replacing the engine. Personal thoughts??

Pfffffft dont let any mechanic talk down to you because you're a woman. Some of us know more about cars than our husbands

When I got into the mini scene years ago I started with a bare shell *cough* or two *cough* or three and found its not what you know its who you know  Met some great people off this site and got alot of priceless advice along the way (oh yeah and plenty of boob talk, youTube, spam, Een's gayness, well you get the drift  ). Always someone willing to lend a hand.

Best of luck on your mini adventure!!

Lol, you've got a point there! I was reading up on cam shafts last night and ended up with my husband looking over my shoulder. Within two minutes, his all-knowing smile had transformed into a slightly worried-looking frown  He's a new car fan - just bought himself a new Honda Type R. Goes like stink but it's so ... computerised. Not my bag at all, but he loves it.

Cheers for the advice.

Hi Ian,

Hopefully you get a fair bit of use out of ausmini. It is addictive though  .

When you get a chance please put some pictures up of your S in the members mini gallery.

Cheers, Nick

Hi Ian!
Well, you're a step ahead of this fellow newbie ... at least you actually own a Mini! I'm still planning/looking. Welcome - can't wait to see photos!

Hi Leighton,

There are quite a few ausmini'ers down your way that you can get help off of if you ever need it (or just go for a run with  ).

Hope you enjoy your time on ausmini.

Cheers, Nick

Hi all,

I'm Matt from the tropical NW coast of Tassie.

I have a 4 year old boy that's just mad on minis and we've decided that we will get a 'do upper' to restore as a family project. So hence the reason I'm here as no doubt there will be a wealth of information available - for which I will thank you in advance.

I've got a few cars sitting in the drive at the moment - the pride of which is my 1983 Peugeot 505 which I classify as a 'rolling restoration' and I have done quite a bit to. The other two cars are much more modern, but nowhere near as much fun nor as loved.

I look forward to hanging around.

Matt

Hi Matt,

There are a few ausmini'ers down in Tassie and with any luck some of them may be close enough to give advice etc. Try and meet up with people if they are going on runs etc.

Hope that you enjoy ausmini.

Cheers, Nick

Welcome Matt (I've always wanted to say that  )

Seems lots of Pugs classify as rolling restorations! Cheers, Mick
