Stew, if you bring a heap of stuff in, I'm pretty sure you'll cop GST and Duty. So have some $$$ ready for this.

It'll still work out heaps cheaper than buying whatever it is here, but getting slugged with GST and Duty could be a rude surprise if you're not expecting it.

whats GST again?

but thanks for the note, i only intend to bring the small stuff out, so no big engines or the like, hoping if it can be seen as spare parts for a car then i might get away with it?

Keep in mind that duty and GST is only payable on items you bring in to sell. If you own it, you've paid VAT already (and have proof), and you don't look like you're importing bits commercially you'll get away without paying duty and GST.

You won't pay GST or duty on your car, furniture, or any other possessions -- if your "spare parts" are "possessions" then you'll be fine ;)

not necessarily - if you've bought it in the past year you get charged (assuming you're honest and say so on the customs form :)). I was charged 10% customs duty and THEN 10% GST on the value of the goods PLUS customs duty on a pile of stuff i brought back over last year. $900 worth of stuff + $90 Customs duty + $99 GST.

theoretically you can inversely not pay (or claim back) the UK VAT but I kind of f---ed up that up when i did it and missed the opportunity to do so..

If I could offer any advice, it would be to buy whatever you are going to and then make sure it looks like you've owned it for over a year remove packaging and sure as heck don't have invoices or receipts for things packaged with them - as long as you've 'owned' it over a year it's just considered a possesion and is not taxed. At least then you can tell them you've owned everything for over 1 year and there's less contrary evidence!

Yeah, and bring some crisps too - Prawn Cocktail, Smokey Bacon and Pickled Onion Monster Munch. And Frazzles. oh, and Wheat Crunchies, and Red MIll Bacon Streaks (finest petrol station crisps known to mankind).

F***, I'm getting hungry...need to go to the british sweet shop again soon...

I might be able to source some mambas, are they rare and in demand in Aus then?

Um, yes 8)

You can buy them from the UK, but the freight cost makes it prohibitive.

Not really, a mate of mine got a set of 4 6" mamba's from ebay in the UK a few weeks back, with freight & everything they cost him $540 to his door, cheaper than you can buy them out here.

Yow, that's a good deal! I would expect freight alone on something that bulky to be in the hundreds of $$..

There used to be "the british shop" at Robina Town Center on the Gold Coast that stocked all the British staples you'd be craving , not sure if it's still there but there'd be something similar in Brissy somewhere . After all , if you can buy Tim Tams in the "Aussie shop" in the center of London , you can get pommy foods down here if you look hard enough
