Hi all. Well this is my first post as I’m new to ausmini. Thought a few of you’d be interested in the car I recently bought as it’s a bit unusual.

Firstly, I bought it from more or less the original owners (who were an elderly couple in their 80’s and bought the car when it was a couple of years old from Kellow Falkner), so I have pretty much the complete history of the car, with lots of receipts etc including the original service books, purchase receipt, and warranty.

It’s a 1969 Morris Mini 1100 ‘Standard’. That is, the basic ‘poverty pack’ version of the Mini K. In the original marketing info from 1969, the mini range includes Mini K, matic, Cooper S, Van, and Mini 1100 ‘Standard’. Apparently the ‘standard’ was made in quite small numbers as the base model mini (more or less a mini K with van spec), so they could advertise “new mini from $____”, but when people get into the dealership there’s no ‘standards’ available so people have to upgrade to the ‘K’ or Cooper S :wink: . I understand a lot of the ‘standards’ went to govt departments.

Basically mines a Mini K with 850 style grill and basic central dash (no oil or temp gauge), basic interior, no hydrolastic suspension, no heater, push button start, and ‘morris mini minor’ badge. It has the remote-change gearshift. The body prefix is YG2S3. The original sales receipt confirms that body prefix, as well as it being vehicle 728, which means that it was the 228th Mini 1100 ‘Standard’. The original handbook confirms that all the above is original with the ‘standard’ model.

Unfortunately, the owners replaced the original seats with ‘clubman’ types because they wanted headrests. I’m going to have to hunt down some low-back seats. They also accidentally let the rego run out in 1999 (wife blames husband, husband blames vicroads), so it hasn’t got the original plates. I’m planning on getting the original black and white plates re-issued.

Anyhow, enough rambling.. See pix below. I’d be keen to get any feedback. This it my first mini, but I also own an original truimph 2500 (currently for sale), and a 69 VW beetle which is currently in a lot of bits. I’m in Bendigo, Victoria by the way..

I knew that they existed, I had guessed the prefix number but it is nice to really see one.
I have written YG2S3 into my database. (myth busted :D )

Did the previous owners put it up for sale or did you wrestle the car off them?

It's the kind of thing I always hear about but never come across myself.

Great news.
I got one almost the same (1 owner all the papers and period accessories) and its white!
Hey yours has a radio - is it a 1970 period piece too?

Yeah is has an original BMC radio. I actually have the original installation receipt and manual for the radio too. It was installed by R.W.Jobson for Kellow-Falkiner when the car had done 00020 miles!

Mort Subite, is your body prefix YG2S3 too? I had to do a bit of research after first looking at the car, as I couldn't find YG2S3 on any lists. It was also manufactured in that period in 1969 when no compliance or ID plates were fitted to minis, just the stampings next to the radiator. It eased my mind when I found the matching body number on the original purchase receipt in the handbook.

Yeah it was up for sale, but the owners had left the responsibility of selling to a family friend. After much looking and driving it we went around and had a nice cup of tea :D with the elderly owners, and I was able to find out lots of information about it. Apparently they tried to sell it 7 years ago but the wife ended up 'pulling the plug' on the sale as she couldn't part with her car. That's why they had a friend do it this time :D .

Ah no Brendan sorry for the confusion, my car is a 65 Deluxe YMA2S2.

It was my elderly Aunts car, 33,000 miles, she had kept all the books and service receipts, oh and several letters from BMC Managing Director at the time about some issue she had trying to change gears.

Lots of other fun bits too like her choice of factory fitted safety options and modifications to the interior to make it more DELUXE.. she wanted chrome fittings on everything. but she didnt spec a radio :?

For the record I know of two other YG2S3 pov pack models here in Canberra. Unfortunately neither is still original. Although both show signs of originally being a magic wand gearshift (not remote) and I don't think either has the hole for a push button starter.

Thats interesting, as my car has definitely had remote gearshift and push button start from new.

The original handbook that came with my car (dated April 1969) shows all manual models (K, Cooper S, Standard, Moke, Van) as having remote gearshift. It also gives separate directions for starting the 1100 standard and Van; to "turn the key clockwise" and "press the black circular switch situated on the floor..."

It'd be interesting to find out if those cars in Canberra are older or newer than mine.. Whether they went back to a 'magic wand' or back to a push button start.. It seems to me they always had their main model with all the features, then stripped a few random things off them for the pov packs (to justify a lower sale price). It's not like it would have cost them much to put on a temp gauge or anything :D

I will be talking to one of the cars owner tonight, I'll get him to check. My recollection is that it currently has a rod change, but has the hole for the magic wand covered over with plate.

As for your manual, that may not be quite right as vans were definitely fitted with magic wand. Also bear in mind there were Clubman vans and pov pack model Clubmans fitted with magic wand gearchange from the factory, both later model than yours. But then, what BMC did with their cars can sometimes be a bit random. I owned a roundnose 850 van that didn't fit in with what was supposed to be factory original, yet it was as the factory had built it.
