My car had a slight "miss" through the high rev range which I decided to "look into" ... BIG mistake.

1. Started by checking the dizzy cap, points etc. sprayed some RP7 into it then the slight miss turned into a MAJOR miss! i.e. running like a dog.

3. Took the cap off again and proceded to dry the cap, points area with a hair dryer. Then it wouldn't start at all.

3. Cap off again and cleaned up the points and cap and rotor as much as possible. Re-checked the points gap and adjusted slightly as it appeared too wide.

Car now starts and runs but still drives terribly. MIssing and hesitating badly. :?

WTF did I do and how do I fix it!!

Annoyed and embarrassed,
BC

Don't suppose it's as simple as a crook ignition lead?
When the cap's come off the lead has been damaged more?

is there any excess freeplay in the diss shaft? (sideways movement), Is it a vac advance dissy without the advance connected? is the timing right?, what about the rocker clearances, it could be tne condensor in the dissy not keeping up or even a spark plug breaking down, maybe even the fuel pump isnt up to the job? (elec or mechanical?)

Usually by this stage I would consider a complete dizzy service rather than a piecemeal approach.

Leads, cap, rotor button (which can leak to ground like the dizzy cap as well), points and condensor.

I had this problem once as well, and my spraying the cap with WD40 sealed it actually. WD 40 displaces water, but it isn't an insulator either. Once it flashes over and carbonises it is an efficient conductor.

hmmmm .... lots to consider but the key is that it was only a very slight miss prior to me actually rooting around with it.

Hence I do believe the problem lies within the dizzy/cap/points/rotor/leads .... just not sure which one!!!

Is it your new mini or the brown one Skender ? If it's the new one do you have any idea how old the points , condenser , coil are ? Check the little wire that goes from the coil to the points and the condenser wire , I've had them both hanging on by a single thread of wire and not letting enough current through to run properly . Maybe the succesive cleaning has broken the remaining contact and it runs while it touches but intermittently breaks ?

<EDIT> , While stripping some clubman seats the other day I found two squares of the original brown vynil about 4" X 4" that were used as padding around the head rest shaft , they haven't seen daylight since the mini was trimmed early 70's so are perfect colour , are they any use to you as colour samples to keep with your other bits and pieces ?

It's the new one. God bless the little brown beast it just doesn't miss a beat (touch wood).

I have no idea on condition of the above mentioned but am making enquiries as we speak. I'm only working half day today so will be straight into it once I get home and will check all that stuff.

Thanks for the offer on the vinyl samples mate but I actually have 4 meters of the vinyl as well as 3 meters of the dot pattern cloth whcih I bought from John Smidt a while ago.

Problem solved.

Replaced the coil with one I had in the shed and everything went away!! Then went and bought a Bosch GT40 High Performance coil from Burson today, cost me $50. Did I get ripped off?

Anyway - don't really care. Car running beaut now.

Thanks for all the help people.

Cheers,
BC.

Hi Slender,

Good to know the issue is sorted. You should now check the wires on the coil. My GT used to start missing like cr&p at 4k rpm. Anywhere, anytime it would happen. Turns out the contact on the coil -> dizzy wire was loose. Crimped it and no missing since. 4k must have been the magic number to set up enough vibration to rattle the contacts and cause the miss.

Gavin
