FORMER rugby union star Ben Tune was taken to hospital yesterday after crashing his car in a motor race at Perth's Barbagallo Raceway.

The World Cup-winning Wallaby and ex-Queensland Reds player was driving in the Mini Challenge - a support race to the V8 Supercar championship - when he flipped his car after losing control.

It took a rescue team 20 minutes to pull Tune from his car before he was placed in a neck brace and on a spinal board, then taken to the on-track medical centre.

Tune was conscious but complained of back pain. He was taken to hospital for precautionary checks.

The 31-year-old retired from rugby at the end of last season after a stellar 46-Test international career.

He is a keen motor racing fan and recently drove in the celebrity challenge at the Australian Formula One Grand Prix in Melbourne.

That led to an invitation to take part in the Mini Challenge - an eight-race support program to the V8s in which all participants drive Minis.

Mini's roll easily, given the right conditions, but the roll looked 'soft' compared to David Wheatleys at Bathurst.

20 minutes isn;t to bad to get him out. I have sat in one and it takes a fair bit just to in to the seats, with the role cage. so by the time the ambos get there, access it, cut something and get him out.

Ben Tune, after scoring the match winning try in the 1999 Rugby World Cup Grand Final and in the process breaking the arm of the opposing French winger with his melon, he manages to top that off by making the MINI that little bit rarer. :wink:

pretty silly mistake he made driving wise.. looks like he lifted mid slide. that thrifty car at bathurst was amazing.. i saw it happen when i was there lol the wheel went crazily high in the air!
