I have a tired 1100 and a bare 1100s block, head and box.
Apart from pistons, rods and crank, is it possible to use all the other components from the 1100 to build the 1100s.
Even if this is possible, by the time the major bits are bought (head, crank, rods etc) would I be better of $$$$ wise just buying a rebuilt 1275 and box instead??
Any thoughts?

1100s is really a 1275cc engine so the crank etc wont fit.
Before you rebuild anything what do you want to do with the car? cruising, racing (hillclimbs, sprints, motorkhanas, circuit, autocross), daily driver etc, etc.........
Then workout how much can you afford to spend on an engine & g/box rebuild?
Then you can determine which way you go....either rebuild what you have or purchase another (larger 1275 cc) engine/gearbox and rebuild that. If you would like an estimate or 2 im only a phone call or email away, like many others here.

I'm toying with the idea of entering it in the 8th mile drags here at home just for a bit of fun.
It's only bracket racing so I'm not after an all out performance motor, just something that's strong and reliable with enough power to have a bit of a play with.
It will be bit of a laugh lining up against my workmates twin turbo LS1 Torana :D

plenty of threads on here, books and videos on how to make a 1275 go faster..

but it does really depend on what you want from the engine as to which way to go - buying a rebuilt motor or rebuilding yours..

rebuilding takes more time and more money than you think.
i would only do it if you have a specific reason to. (stroker, turbo, originality, racing etc.)

As others have said
The cost of rebuilding a 1275 motor and an 1100 motor are about the same and the 1275 will bolt up to your existing gearbox etc.

But by the time you source a crank, conrods, pistons and a 940 head as well as a 1275 primary gear then the costs will mount.

You are also required to fit disc brakes. But the performance differences are immediately noticeable. You suddenly have a car with a good power to weight ratio.

As I'm not after anything special in the motor, It seems that I'm better of with a good reco instead.

Well a good reco engine is a god engine. The 1100 is a good strong motor.

Most mini motors do need a rebore as the bores tend to wear elliptical over time so dont just put new rings and bearings in. Thats a waste of money. Also the heads and blocks tend to warp and both will need a skin to get good mating surfaces.

There is a host of other things that need replacing at the same time, such as the oil pump, timing chain (going to a duplex -double row - setup is a good idea) as well as new lifters. Its also a good idea to have he block acid cleaned and the oil galleries cleaned with a rod. A new clutch and a new seal of oil seals wont go astray either. Add an new water pump.

If you are unsure mechanically, then its a good idea to put it in the hands of as good mini man such as ballistic then you know you have good engine that will have a solid engine you can have some fun with. They can also tell you which is the better gearbox of the two you have.

Done properly and done ONCE - you are then able to have 100,000 kilometres of good motoring. Its a big investment but worth it.

then use your block and buy a 1275 primary gear

Steve, I'll be talking to you within the next few days about having a tinker with my 1275 EFi that I got of you for my van.
It's time to fire her up but I can't get the fuel pump to start pumping.
It could do with an eye over everything anyway before I get any closer to roadworthy time! :wink:
