Hi Guys,
I was just wondering what Carburettor came standard with a 1972 Clubman 998cc, i was thinking a SU HS2, but wasn't to sure.
Also is it possible to fit a twin HS2 or HS4 instead (providing you have the right manifold), if so how difficult is it and what materials and steps are required to do so.
Also is the performance much higher then a standard HS2.

A 1972 Clubby didn't come with a 998, it had a 1098.
Standard carby on that was an HS2 SU.

When Leyland ran out of Oz made 1098 motors around 1975 they fitted UK built 998 motors instead (99H engine prefix). These came with an HS4.

Fitting an HS4 instead of an HS2 is worth about 3 or 4HP, according to Clive Trickey's books.

Are you sure that the engine was a 1098cc, i was told a 998cc.
Though i guess that there's an advantage with it.
I'll have to get the engine number.

All Aussie Minis from mid 69 to mid 75 had 1100cc motors except for the Cooper S and the Clubman GT.

Consider it gospal then

Just because of the model doesnt make it a 1098....it is possible to have had an engine replaced and a 998 put in instead....

could also be a 998 block with a 1098 crank in it
Someone knows how to measure the differance via the spark plug hole with the top of the pistins

I went outside just before and had a look at the engine numbers which are 99H834AJH6038 and was made in 2/73 not 72.
So is it still a 1098cc or is it a 998cc.
Also i dont think the engine has been changed before.

998 Unless it has an 1100 crank as already stated. And that is a later model engine number so it must have been changed at some stage.

If it is a 73 it will have been made with an 1100.
I bet your chassis number on the compliance plate has 022D2S1 M10 ***** (the numbers in red could be 1 or 2 depnding on the spec of the car) The M10 on the end means the car was made with a 4 speed manual 1100 motor.

That engine number is from a fully imported 998 motor. It would have been a post 1976 pollution motor equipped with air injection and all the other rubbish.

I went outside and had a look for the code and i got 021 A2S2 M10 945, so i would assume that it is a 1100, but there are some differences to the code you write, what do they mean.

021 = Leyland Mini (022 = Leyland Mini S)
A = manual gearbox (D = manual gearbox, X = manual gearbox, it is some silly complaince code that means nothing!)
2S = 2 door saloon (aren't they all!)
2 = trim level 2. (trim version, 1 = standard, 2 = Deluxe, 3 = SS, 4 = LS)
M = 4 speed floor change manual transmission.
10 = 1098 motor. (09 = 998 motor, 12 = 1275)

Does that mean that the engine is a 1098cc or does it just mean that the orignal was a 1098cc.

The Original was a 1098, as stated your current engine is a 998.
