Clarkson is an arse when it comes to driving a difficult car, great at going flat out. That W12 GTI looked mean and I noticed that the Stig seemed to do much better (surprise). Still it was slower than the Vauxhall VXR (rebadged Monaro SS or something!). Also you only have to see how crap they are when they took the three supercars around the Stelvio Pass...

Oi! I take offense at that! I think it was more to do with that it was a pure concept car with no intentions of being put into production, so they just got a whole load of good bits out of their parts bin and voila! 650hp, mid-mount, in a... golf. Sounds good, needed more R&D.

Mid to late 90's Subaru build the Vivio turbo charged & supercharged 660cc 4WD, about the size of a Suzuki alto, i saw them in action at the rally of canberra, quick little buggers, no one in Oz imports them, bugger.

They were also supercharged werent they??

My understanding is that the earlier 90's Vivio's were FWD with supercharger.
It was only the late '90's that were AWD and turbo'd........

Here is an example.....

Leyland Australia made a handful of mokes using the same setup , mixed results really as they just used a second crownwheel on the side of the existing one with a pinion onto a driveshaft running back to a rear diff . There was no viscous coupling or anything to split power front to rear so they tended to bind up a bit if used on the road or anywhere with high grip levels . They did have a dog clutch between front and rear though so you could stop the power going to the rear wheels .
