Just for the head and block and internals you could be looking around $600 average price but thats not a definite so look around the various mini part importers and also put a post in the wanted section to see who's got one Gearbox cost could be anything really but since you're wanting to turbo it I'd suggest getting a cheap gearbox and then fully rebuilding it so you know it's got a good chance to handle the power output of the turbo otherwise you could be fitting someone elses problems and have to rip it out and rebuild it anyway as for tips on building a turbo motor have a look in A/A+ mods and find pristics thread on his turbo lso do a search for the one kazjim did it was a 998 or could be 1100 from memory but engine capacity doesn't matter really as the preperation will be pretty much the same whether you do a 1275 or a 998 or a 1098

Yeah, lots and lots of tips in the A/A+ Mods forum ...
Tip 1 - Make sure you have REALLY good brakes
Tip 2 - Make sure you have REALLY good tyres
Tip 3 - Make sure you have REALLY good bank balance ;) It'll get very pricey very quick... no matter what you plan, budget, think, hope ;)

Good luck.

Peter

you might want to get a few blocks and spare heads if you plan to run 15psi every day

It just doesn't sound like a good idea running an everyday 1275 turbo at 15psi. Now I don't claim to know anything about turbo'd minis, but i do no that if you have to ask how much, then you can't afford it. Because with that much boost you will rebuilding the motor and the gearbox quite often.

Mine was running 7psi daily... then 10psi for about 2 days (leaning out) so I wound it back... it will run 10psi normally and up to 12psi ... its a daily... ill let you know what breaks ;)

Actually, it should be fine if its built right, on even 15psi as a daily... just dont thrash the crap out of it ALL the time... but yeah, head gaskets or pistons might be problematic

Mine bent valves on 10psi ;)

15 psi is a bit much for an a-series and box to run daily.

remember factory limited the ERA turbo to like what.. 4 psi because of the gearbox..

my box broke with 1360 and 6psi.

Torque breaks boxes, so I guess it depends on the size of your turbo ( ie how low it comes on max psi ) and your driving 'style'

Grant (BoostedMini) has one of the best set up 'big block' turbos out there, not sure what boost he runs dailyY

Oh and Doz of course, I'm sure they will chip in to this thread sometime

I would suggest going for a ride in Grant's (mine is in bits atm), Benjamin's or pristic's before you build something.

Mine is 11-12psi and ~1293, completely impractical for the street and not much better for the track. The power is all or nothing due to the low compression ratio and the only thing this does well is fry the tyres.

Someone once commented - your Mini has two speeds, stop and oh s$^t!

Anything 'daily' would need to have a decent compression ratio to make it drivable, nothing worse than driving around under the boost threshold and having absolutly nothing to push you when you need it. An engine designed for 15psi on unleaded is going to be a pig under 3,000rpm.

If you use a recon gearbox (with new bearings throughout) you should get decent life but it will still be a weak point. Torque is the killer so limiting the boost down low will help.

Run an intercooler for free hp, cool air at less boost will equal better hp than high boost, hot air.

Run electronic ignition ala megajolt or similar for best results, at high boost you will retard the timing (at the same rpm) compared to lower loads and you can't do this with a dizzy.

Lastly, turbominis.co.uk is your friend :D

As Daniel said, there is a huge difference with them. Mine has higher compression, 9.5:1 and its a daily. It runs like your normal mini off boost... under 2000rpm its quite sluggish but I am running an RE13T cam now... the motor was originally built with an RE13 cam, and very different setup and was worse under 3000rpm if you believe that... the turbo (actually the change in cam) made it friendlier and smoother at low rpm.

7-9psi would be plenty for a daily... they are blazingly quick...

My gearbox was completely rebuilt too... but it'll break eventually... the torque does affect things, but I will still argue its driving style. Dump the clutch a few times in an N/A mini and you will break the box too...

Pete
