hi,

im reconditioning a mini clubman for my hsc next year and i am thinking of changing from a 998 to a 1275. do you have to buy new electrical parts like dizzy, coil, alternator etc? is there any parts you have to buy except the engine and gearbox? can i just change the components over?
do i have to change engine mounts?

You will need to have Disk Brakes on the front.

Both.

1275's have to have Disk :evil: Brakes :twisted: to be legally registered.

Everything will change over, and you don't need new engine mounts. However as you already know, a 1275 is a lot more expensive and it will legally require disk brakes.

For a set of 7.5inch disks, which you will allow you to run 10inch wheels, will set you back about $1500 - $1800 not fitted.

For a set of 8.4inch disk, which require 12inch wheels will be somewhat cheaper, and could be done for $800-$1200.

Depending on what spec motor you decide to use you will also need to have suitable carburettors. For a 998 you could get away with a single inch and a quater SU, or a single inch and half SU, or even Twins. But a 1275 will require a minimum of an inch an a half SU, and depending on the spec may need bigger, or twins or a webber.

The cost of building a small bore as apposed to a big bore is relatively similar when comparing the cost of labor, but the part for a 1275 will be somewhat more expensive.

In the end, it depends on the kind of budget you have and the desire of power. Small bore motors can be built to produce impressive performance.

Those prices quoted by Ryan are second hand...I think you can get hold of a new set of 8.4s but will be at the higher end of the prices which would be more like $1200 to $1800, a reco set of 8.4s you might pick up for around the $800 to $1000....

By the time you get them second hand and refurbish them you'll be looking at a similar amount . This often comes up and people keep looking for the cheaper option but it isn't really there , if you use honda or Camira brakes you'll need to get them engineered for road use and that puts them up towards Cooper S ones . Remember the 7.5" discs were only fitted to cooper S (7,500 or so made) and Clubman GT (1,000 or so , anyone got the right figures ?) so there were only around 8,000 (allowing 500 sets or so for special orders etc) sets produced in Australia . Considerring there seems to be almost every cooper s still on the road (if not more on the road than were produced) the brakes are very rare and valuable . The only other option really is to buy the new ones as the orriginals are like buying GT falcon bits which people have no qualms paying big money for .

ian of the 7500 or so cooper s made there are probably 15000 left on the road

Save up for the brakes...and make sure your 998 is as well tuned as it can be.

A 998 with good brakes will still be a lot of fun.

Then think about a larger engine or an 1100 stroker when you come into some money :idea:

I have to agree with 9YaTah, there is no point in going fast if you can't stop. A 998 can still be a lot of fun, especially if you have it tuned right.

Get the cars body sorted, as well as the interior, suspension and brakes etc, before you add more power to the mix.
