Congratulations on your decision.

By all means do a few private practices to get a feel for the car. When you do your CAMS license test do it through an advanced driving school and do it in a road car. Even if you hire one for the day, something front wheel drive.

It wont be the same as the race car sure but it should keep going. Race cars are notorious for breaking down on the day or running too hot and you end up concentrating on the car rather than on the driving.

Apart from that, if you have the inherant goods the instructors will coach you as they want you to pass. Just doing an observed practice means that there is a bunch of fairly critical observers watching how you drive and its more black and white.

It still amazes me that most people who want to get into entry level motorsport equate winning with the car, when its more about the driver!

My $0.02

Well - given that it takes about twelve months to learn race craft and techniques, I think that in every entry level racing there are some average drivers in well developed cars, some really talented drivers in average cars and finally, some really talented drivers in well developed cars.

I would still rate the car as 75% of the package and the driver as up to 25% of the package. In some cases you may only have a 60% package. Mostly they are about 85% packages across the board.

Well I hope my driving skills are upto par :) ... i work in law enforcement and spend many hours driving in extreme conditions and at often extreme speeds, but have been fortunate enough to have done a great advanced driving course ... hopefully i can convert those skills onto the track :)

A very experienced Australian race-car driver once said after winning his 4th Targa Tasmania - "A good driver can always make an average car go quick, while its hard for an average driver to make a good car go quick" - he was talking about his opponent at the time who wasnt driving a Porsche GT2.

You know who I mean........

I think his words speak voumes.
