the difference is the throat size, and therefore amount of air that can go through it....

easiest way to tell the size is by the mounting bolts

1.25" - bolts are lined up vertically IE:
o
o

1.5" - bolts are lined up at 45 degrees IE:
o
....o

1.75" - 4 bolts IE:
o o
o o

1.75"s commonly come in 2 varieties, the HS variety has the fuel bowl beside it, the HIF variety has the bowl underneath. 1.5"s also come with the underneath bowl, but they're not common

Measure the throat is the easiest way but also have a look at the stud holes where it mounts onto the manifold , if there are two studs vertically opposed it's an 1 1/4" , if there are two studs diagonally opposed it's an 1 1/2" , if there are 4 studs it's an 1 3/4" .

the hs4 or inch and a half is physically bigger than the hs2 or inch and a quarter.

in addition the hs4 uses a doughnut shaped air filter that totally surrounds the carb, wheras the hs2 has a smaller round airfilter box next to the carb.

also you can tell by the nuts that attach it to the....

A bloke on the 1100 mailing list was having trouble with a flat spot in his fairly worked Austin 1300 at higher speeds, he tried a lot of things to cure it and in his desperation he removed the HIF44 (1¾") and stuck on the stock HS4 (1½"). It didn't cure the flat spot (which he found was a dodgy plug lead) but it did improve the pick-up and drivability so much that he is sticking with the HS4.
