Hi Guys,
I am wanting to install a cigarette lighter in my Mk2 Cooper, this is in order to run a Tomtom GPS system so my mum can find her way around cairns!lol

Anyhow, any installation tips and tricks would be appreciated, eg: for where to wire it etc.

No to difficult. Just get a feed wire (I usually get the feed wire straight from the fuse box, I try not to splice into other wires) and attach that to the bit in the middle that pokes out of the cigarette lighter.

Find a good earth and attach a wire from the earth to the case of the cig lighter. It should now be all good. If I were you I'd also wire in a fuse (maybe 10 amp?).

I'd mount it under the dash or some where near the windscreen where there is nothing that is going to catch on fire.

please ensure you put a Fuse in as you dont wan't the tomtom to go up in smoke but yes it should be easy. not sure on the wireing but you could also hard wire it in also but once again put a fuse in and make sure the earth is nice and clean

this is easy question i do this sort of crap 8 hours a day 5 days a week simply run a wire from the fuse box with the main loom in through the grommet in the fire wall to wherever you want to put it attach to the centre usually male push on terminal on the socket and run a earth wire to a solid part of the car such as a bolt through the firewall
there is need to run a in fuse as long as you hook it onto the fused side of the fusebox
if you wont to be able to use the socket while the car is turned off run your wire with the purple wires at the fuse box or if you only want it to come on with the ignition run your wire with the green ones at the fusebox and finally for god sake take the time to solder all of your connections.

The number of cars I have pulled apart only to find some idiot has twisted the wires together by hand and applied making tape is just stupid.

solder always solder
everday i get paid to repair damaged looms because of improper connections crimp then solder if you havent got a soldering iron run down to supercrap and spend ten bucks on one.
think of it this way ten bucks now and half an hours time or $550 and up to six week wait for the new loom when yours gets damaged
