Can someone please identify my tacho.
It's an aussie one, switchable between 4, 6 and 8 cyl. Are they all switchable?

Are there any numbers on the face? Down near where the needle comes 'out'.

How many wires come from the back, and what colour are they?

Is there a seperate bulb holder or is it built in?

It looks very similar to one I have, except it only had two wires with a seperate bulb holder, that attached near the front, under the main body.

Matt

Two wires from the rear - grey and grey w/ black (or are they meant to be white? - sorta looks like speaker wire to me though!)
Bulb holder underneath - green and red wires

Not your traditional smiths tacho, I'm not sure where this one comes from but they weren't typically switchable. They're pretty agricultural typically if you open one up.
I would guess however that this was aimed squarely at the aftermarket, as if you are going to make 10,000 units for a model of car, you won't waste your money on a 4,6,8 cylinder switch.

Yep, that's the one I have.

Could never ID it. Asked a few Instrument repair places, and a few classic car forums, no-one had any idea. Mick's idea of an aftermarket one is a good one.

To hook it up:
The bulb hooks in like any bulb.
The Grey, Grey Black Trace wires go to the coil, in a negative earth car, the G/B wire goes to the the positive, Grey goes to negative.

That's how I hooked it up to mine, Well I think it is, can tell you next week when I'm working on it. (Stored at a friend's house, can't get back till next saturday   )

If you need to know sooner, let me know, I'll see if I can get someone to go check it before then.

These are pics from the inside, just for interest:
