I still have the heating unit in my car, even though it's not connected properly and everything is seized. I was thinking of just getting rid of it entirely, as I wouldn't use it anyway.

What advantages/disadvantages are there? (If any)

Um, my old man was a mechanic and he said they could fail you on rego (in NSW at least) if your windscreen demisters didn't work  so I would say hang on to it.

Bye, Arrin

I hardly use mine on the clubby, and it hardly demists my windscreen if it's fogged up, which it rarely is anyway..and that's what 1/4 vents are for anyway :)

With regards to rego in NSW, yes you COULD fail rego if it's not working, but i have yet to see anyone check except for an NRMA inspection guy.

I find heat in winter, at least for here anyway is fine just coming from the engine, and it heats up the interior nicely

Heater is great in summer for the added water capacity to keep your engine cool though..

Yeah apart from the coolant capacity increase I'd say do it if you really want to. My heater is not connected in my car and I got it rego'd...

You don't really need a heater just to get demisting... 13secmini has a 12V computer fan in top of dash, blowing cabin air at the screen... :P

I prefer the MiniMatic/Deluxe fresh air heaters (under bonnet) instead of the in- car ones, because they double as an aux radiator in hot weather. And you can still get cool air into the car with the heater `working'..

Suggest you fix it or get rid of it.

You must have the system working for NSW rego, I had a mini rejected because the fan did not blow enough air. When I checked the fan there was a lump of foam in the duct???

Regards Mr Meaner

This may sound stupid, but do you guys in NSW need to undergo vehicle examinations everytime you renew your rego?

Yes. It may sound bad but it is really just a case of making sure everything works properly and go to an inspector that you like!

Oh... Now I know why you guys are so paranoid about rego all the time! Here in W.A., once a car is registered, it's registered. A vehicle inspection is only needed, say, if I resprayed my car a different colour, or swapped engines. Or if you are silly enough to let the rego fully expire, if you forgot to pay it or something. I'm not concerned about the rego side of things if my heater isn't there. I was just thinking that it places less stress on the water pump... I dunno... Plus, I reckon it makes the inside look a little neater.

doesn't place any extra stress on the pump really IMO.

my mini minor had no heater in Sydney, could have done with it a few times driving south in the middle of winter. had it like that for 5 years.

then i moved to Launceston, working shift work in winter i needed a heater. could not get one that worked, but a clubbie core and casing. bought a 12V marine bilge blower and hooked it up to the clubbie casing. never had a problem with not enough air to demist the window after that. BTW i never put a tap in for the water, so the core is always helping to cool the engine, if it gets way too hot i just turn the blower on and it drops engine temp by 10 deg instantly.

In NSW isnt the rule if it didnt come with the car then it doesnt need to be there for rego..??

When I got Mo registered it wasnt even a consideration. He doesnt have a fan or a heater or even a hole to the engine bay (well he didnt, but he does now). In winter its f'king freezing and yeah the 1/4 windows need to be bent back all the way to keep the window clear, but thats all the fun of a 1960's car
