I was involved in a conversation regarding surface rust. These guys (not Mini owners) were talking about using Naval Jelly (or similar) on their surface rust as they were claiming sandblasting is too harsh etc.. Others preferred the 'old fashioned' way of removing it..

What is your opinion regarding the removal of surface rust? What method do you use?

if its only surface rust i just sand it :shock:

When I was rubbing mine back I remember getting this stiff that you just literally wipped the surface rust off with. Just went down to the local automotive paint supplier to buy it.

I probably won't be able to have children as a result of being exposed to it but hey, the paint looks nice.

theres a stuff called rust remover
smelly shiet
you wipe on, wait for reaction, wipe off

if surface rust, you can just treat with rust converter,
and they say you can paint over it,
im not too sure about its holding ability though

That's all we were going to do but then you get 'some' people (you know the ones that think they know everything but are seriously deluded) telling you how they think it should be done.. :roll:

heaps of people swear by rust converter, I keep meaning to get some - apparently you just spray if on, wait a bit, brush the loose crap off and then paint over it :shock:

It's not as good as it seems, but it helps.
I found the best one was Permatex (now Loctite) rust converter- white bottle with orange cap. Some of the others do SFA...
My S doors on the `matic had a little surface rust when I did this 9 years ago- it's bled thru again and now I've gotta sand the doors!
Might refit the originals- less work!
OTOH the rest of the car is not much better.. :cry:

The mini van shell I bought has lots of surface rust on it so I called in a professional who advised me to get it blasted. His advice was that it would come back through the paint as Kevin's has. The mob who are going to do it also dip the whole body after blasting. I was a bit concerned aboit getting it blasted as it is a brand new sheel and I did not want it damaged, but this company do a lot of hot rods so are aware of the problems.

Yeah I agree with the sand paper and a bit of effort, that way you KNOW the rust has gone.

Incidentally for a rust proof primer I use aircraft Zinc oxide primer - Its the green paint you sometimes see inside old warplanes. it was designed for aluminium but actually works much better on steel. I work on aircraft so get it through work and it comes in spray cans. I don't know if it is available for general useage as it is pretty toxic to breath in. You dont need to apply heavily just a light coat and then put your general hi-fil or sanding primer straight on top. 3 or 4 cans should do the whole car inside and out.It's about $20 a can. Actually if anyone is interested I can do a bit of research to find out if it is available for general use and where you can get it from. Just had a look now - try Aviall in VIC, NSW, WA and QLD.

Lizzie (my LS) is bare metal atm, and she had a lot of surface
rust on her when i bought her (some dingbat left her in primer)
i found rubbing it back with sandpaper (wet) done a rel tops
job, don't use any thign that will leave scratches in
the metal though,,,,,,,btw NO SANDBLASTING!!!!!! i have heared
stories (first hand off a mini owner!) that it warped his whole
car!!! use sand paper i say
