I have been doing a few thread searches and a few people have stated that they used have, or have had, or know about trailers that ausminers are using to tow there mini around on have 10 inch wheels and brakes.
I know you cannot purchase brakes for 10 inch wheels but for the people in the know, were they once available (brakes for 10 inch wheels), or have they modified a set of mini brakes to suit.

You could just run Mini drums with a hydraulic override coupling.


But if I was building a trailer to carry a Mini I would be using 14" or 15" wheels with light truck tyres and electric brakes

14" LTs are the cheapest option

John from MCCNSW built his own trailer using two hydro rear subframes split down the middle for widinening (think about it) and the whole mini rear suspension set up. Both swing arms on the one side are connected, so you have a load sharing dual axle trailer. Has hydraulic brakes as well. As far as i know he has never had an issue with it, but built it years ago.

Saw another similar one at oran park a while back, built by a guy who used to build PRB clubmans. it also had mini hubs and brakes, even included the cable handbrake with a mini handbrake lever to suit.

Whats everyones opinion on running 10ich wheels on a single axle car trailer? From searching threads, cant really get a indication if its a good idea of not. whatever mods are done need to meet rta's regulation so I can register it, and to be able to tow a mini on it!

I doubt a single axle trailer with 10" wheels would carry a Mini, the gross weight of trailer and car would probably exceed the 2 tyres' load rating.
But a hydro tandem axle 10" wheeler would be cool.

The only advantage I can see for Mini wheels on a trailer is low height.
The disadvantages compared to 14" wheels are...
Wheel stud failures
Wheel bearing failures
Tyre failures
Bad brakes

i think my decision is made, will run 14inch wheels. Is there much difference between running mechanical disk or drums or hydralic disks or drums performance wise. Not going electric route as want to use trailer on different cars and can be an ausmini loaner as well.

This happens on just about every long trip. I don't think the 10inch wheels/trailing arms are designed to carry the weight of the trailer + Mini.

I have had a tandem axle car trailer for many years. Yes it has Mini Hubs and wheels. I have done big miles with it carrying Minis te various Speedway tracks and picking Minis from here and there. I bought this trailer ready made as it is with Mini wheels. It was just a coincedence. I once even carried a Volv0 244 on it from about 2K away from Home when my Mrs stacked it. For no reason what so ever I have just built a new trailer and will be selling my old one. It has hydraulic over ride brakes Lots of lights and Jelly bean mags with light truck tyres too. Also fitted with a front mounted small Electric Winch and a Battery cradle which makes it handy pulling cars on when not a goer. Saves pushing ! It is also registered as 1020GVM which here in QLD only pays around $75 a year in reg fee.

I also have a dual axle trailer with mini hubs, mini rear brake drums operated by handbrake lever & cable.

What about using Moke 13" trailing arms & wheels with hydro bags?? Would the longer arms be any weaker than std ones? I know the Moke arms are dry, but could be hooked up.

would you also add poor handling over bumps and potholes? - not so different to the original use of 10's.

I took my wife and daughter for their first ride in the mini last night. I think my wife had been in it once before about 4yrs ago. Every bump they complained and moaned.

I considered running moke rims but still have the same issues with wheel stud failures, I think 14 inch rims will be a more sensible option. I want the trailer to be safe, tow well over long distances as have to pickup a few minis I have tucked away in central qld, a 3500km round trip.......
