Are there any car clubs running motorkhanas who aren't affiliated with CAMS???

I don't know of any.

yeah that morris 1100 fella is allways starting trouble here, we should ban him,,, he`s friends with that miniman fella & he`s a right dork too. :-)

Anyways, back to the topic at hand

You really don`t want to know what my Targa Tasmania rally car cost to build,,, seriously i feel embaressd to say.... & you really don`t want to know what the actual rally cost me to do either.

but if you don`t spend at least $10K then i don`t think you`ll have much chance of finishing the Targa Tassie rally,,, so look at spending "MORE" than that if you can, but the trick is to spend it all in the right places, items & departments

Thanks for your advice with CAMS and Targa guys. I'm heading out to the MCC khana on Sunday to check things out.

I still need some advice on how much Mini you'll get for your money. There's this 1275 LS I am looking at,unregistered, runs, bit of rust, fair condition original interior for $5,000. Is that reasonable? If not, then what can I expect for that kind of money?

I'm sorry if I'm imposing, but I'm new to the scene and don't want to pay too much for a car that doesn't cut the mustard!

Cheers,

Andy

The Targa under AASA this year reduced the cash outlay by drivers to about 1/3rd due to not making huge profits from the event, more efficient use of resources, better staffing and better planning.

I am aligned with M1100 on this, we both have experienced first hand the excessive costs passed onto drivers to do high profit margins, and also their heavy handed tactics with drivers and co-drivers. Basically, they charge ou for everything, sometimes more than once, and then give you very little back.

With CAMS, grass-roots motorsport for the beginner or intermediate is out of reach for most.

Morris, would you agree?

But what is the alternative to CAMS??

I understand they have a monopoly on motorsport in this country but if we wish to participate in the sport we love we have to live with them.

From a 'grassroots motorsport' point of view I don't think the licensing cost and structure is unreasonable. I've only ever participated in club motorsport so cannot comment on events further up the food chain.

$50 for a senior license (non-speed, 1 yr) and $20 per motorkhana is an affordable 'foot in the motorsport door'. This is on top of your car club membership but there are plenty of events to participate in throughout the year.

In other sporting fields there are governing bodies which have a monopoly on chosen events as well. I have participated in mountain bike races for years and Mountain Biking Australia control every event on the calendar. If I want to compete at any level then I must at a MTBA controlled event, whether I think they're ripping me off or not.

I'm not saying that the whole CAMS organisation doesn't have its flaws (which I know it does) but if I wish to continue competing at car club events then I have to live with them.

Mate if you are going out there, then you must be in a car. if you have a car then enter. does not matter what it is, it can do a khana. i have seen everything from purpose built specials to automatic valiant wagons doing khanas. on the dirt it is extremely unlikely to damage your daily driver. as a novice, you are better to just get into it than worry about buying a purpose built car.

as to the monopoly of sporting bodies, my football association was one of only two in NSW to correctly vote against a special levy on my annual registration to get Soccer Australia out of debt they were in due to the mismanagement of that now defunct body. sadly the majority voted for it so now i am still paying off a debt of an organisation that no longer exists. No FFA money is at all involved in the club level that i play at, so why do they take it from me?

cheers
michael

Yeah, thanks for your help Doogie!

I'll be heading up to the MCC khana this weekend to see what I'm in for.

I don't think I'll be racing my Torana, as it's up on eBay, and the last thing I'd want is to snap a steering arm a week before it sells!

Hope to see you all there!

Andy

Yes , don't tempt Murphy's Law .....

As for the LS you mentioned earlier , just check it has all it's original bits for that money if it has some rust , by that I mean original engine (won't be listed on the car but you can check it's the right "type" by the engine number prefix , Morris 1100 can help there) , 8.4" brakes and interior (do a search for 1275LS in members gallery and you'll see what you're looking for ) . All else fails just ask and someone will help out .

a 1275 LS has a bit of a 'rarity' tax on it - there's no need for a competition car to be anything special in terms of what it was when it left the factory - as long as it's got all the right bits when you race it (IE a Sunbird with a 308 and whatever else will go as hard as an A9X, but cost a bunch less)

there are regularly cars with hot motors and adjustable suspensions and whatnot that come up for around the $8K mark, and are basically ready to run - I'd be looking around that sort of money
