G'day everyone,

does anyone have some tricks on getting clubman door handles and locks to work together...

at the moment i can adjust the external handle so it works really well but that then stops the car from locking...

and then i can adjust the handle to get the doors to lock but the I can't open the door with the external handle.

I can see what is going wrong but I don't know how to explain it - I will try and take some photos to add to this to try and help but I was hoping that someone else has had to deal with this and knows what i am talking about...

yeah it is often difficult but it is just a matter of changing it slightly at a time and then testing etc. took me ages to fix my passenger lock.

Just fiddle with the plate that is behind the exterior doorhandle. it is held on with 2 nuts. Very frustrating

Only advice i can offer. Good luck

so this is what i have tried so far...

with the door open I engage tghe striker so that it is as if it is closed...
I then lock the door and check that there is clearance for the little tab to actually lock
while locked i adjust the plate you mentioned so that it is now snug up against the lock mechanism...

this is fine until i unlock the door and then it slips up a little so i can no longer lock the door again...

I am sure that is confusing anyone who hasn't actually attempted this before so i will try and get some photos tonight when i get home!

some thoughts i have had - file down the lock mechanism a little? or maybe weld a little bit in to the section the door handle lifts to release the door... (now i know photos will help)

I also found it worked differently when i put the door card back on.

On one door it actually improved it to make it 'normal', on the other door, it stopped the outside handle from opening it.

So putting the door cards on - from what I thought was only half working (ie restricted movement), it improved dramatically. What I thought was ok, stopped.

Hmmm what person hasn't had an issue with the door locks/handles on a Leyland??

I have issues keeping the pins in the exterior handles on the drivers side especially - I just keep pushing them in whe I open it. I will be watching this thread with interest too - have to do the locks as well :x

My driver's side outter handle has been dangling by one pin for 3 years. The door can't be opened from the inside unless i clip everything inside the door together again. But then it just falls out and stops working again. 8) I think mine locks. Don't really know.

I had the same on my old Clubbie. I struggled with the locking mechanism for months and eventually found that when the door card was installed, it pressed up against the locking shaft, preventing it from moving and being able to lock the door. I gave up and never ever locked it for the next 2 years  As someone else has said, the locking/opening mechanisms are touchy.

it seems perseverance is the answer... managed to get the drivers door working today - I think i was just frustrated the other night which is why it didn't work for me!

temporarily got the passenger one to work as well but need to go back and keep fiddling!

for those with issues once the door cards are on - I can only imagine that the door card presses hard up against the rods that run from the interior handle and that affects the operation of the lock by key... I only hope that that isn't the next thing i strike once i put the door cards on!!

Also - that has to be the hardest place on a car to photograph and then try and explain how it works... I'll keep working on it but if i can't get it out straight and without confusing myself i may not post it!
