Gents,

I wish to connect a switch to turn the electric fan on in my Rover Cooper, I want to be able to turn it on and off when I want to,
I have attached a pic of the 2 connectors that are on the front of the bottom of the radiator, can I just put a switch in between these 2 connectors or is there a correct way to put the switch on the fan.

If so how do I do it.

I think for the EFI cars thats a Brickworx question, but I know on my car that's all I did.
Since my radiator has no spot for a sensor, I just put a switch in. Works great.

Now someone says that it needs a relay....WHAT THE...%#*% is that.

I don't think it needs a relay. When I did mine I picked the positive power from an additional fuse block I fitted (10amp fuse), which proceeds to the switch in the car then to the fan and finally back to earth.
The factory wiring is set up for a fan already, you're simply swapping a temperature dependent switch for a normal one in the car.
Don't do anything tonight, but I'll go through my circuit diagrams and see if the EFI setup is different to carby, but I imagine it's not.

I did this job on a non mini.

I can't make it out very well in the pic, but I presume these two wires are going into the back of a thermo switch somewhere in the cooling system? If this is the case, all's I did on my car was sent two wires from the cabin down to this thermo switch. When the switch is closed, it joins the two wires together. When it's open, it's up to the thermo switch to switch the fan on.

Just to be sure, you could check both wires with a multimeter. One should be live, the other just heads up to the fan.

you could set it up to run through a relay whiuch is not all that hard to do if you want to just be able to run the fan through the switch you could run a wire from the switch to the relay the run a wire of the starter to the relay and the run the wire to the fan the relay would also need an earth as would the fan

if you wanted the fan to run off the temp sender and off a switch the only change that needs to be made is to run a wire off the temp sender and join it into the same terminal as the one from the switch.

Boy, thats easy for you to say,

I will sit in the garage with a slab or brown ale, and look at what you have said, I will then start to demolish the slab and by the time I get to the 12th stubbie, I will beging to understand what you have said, and by the time the slab is finished, I will be able to connect all the wires.

I think I will have to take it to someone who knows about these things, I thought it may be easy to do, but I am now realising that there is more to it than meets the eye.

So thnax to all those who have given me advice, all it has done is made me ralise that I am out of my depth, so thanks again.

Mate . Slabs of beer and Auto Electrics do not mix. Instead of trying to do it yourself it would be better if you were to pay someone profesional to do it. It might be cheaper on the long run. It should not cost all that much any way. What is a Burnt out mini worth ! Leave the beer for after a job is well done.

ummm didnt someone do this sorta set up before? with a thermo sensor on the radiator then was complaining about overheating?
