lots of drag cars use shift kitted auto's

I put a Turbo 350 auto with Stage II shift kit in my SLR 5000 years ago. When others were changing gear, I was pulling away from them  Most of my friends followed suit after having a drive in it!

I can select the right gear with an auto. Roll statrting? you have lost me there. Thats the whole idea I don't need to do heel n toe, flat shifting stuffs things, and if it aint't got a clutch I don't have to double clutch. People never used autos because they were rubbish. Not enough ratios, high slip converters, high power loss, big transmissions. Today you can get a seven speed auto, lock up converter and they are small. You have the choice of auto or manual shift in all the new ones and I do not see any advantage at all in using a manual.

clutchless manuals are good
but
you don't see race drivers or rally drivers using automatics.

When was the last time you saw a European works rally driver use a clutch to change? Those transmissions are so trick its debatable what they are. The Ford Transit vans we drive at work are a clutched 5 speed manual with fully auto operation.

Apparently I can butI know nothing about the performance variations of the different motors so will have to do some homework.

yeah, you can get one.... no americans know how to drive a manual, and they have VTECs in america - therefore auto VTECs must exist ;)

you can get a vtec in a roundie without extending the front, if you use the standard injector body you need to cut the crossmember, Besser on here is doing a vtec roundie, and I'm doing a SOHC honda 1500 in a roundie

so you've decided to get rid of the Bini then? good work ;)

i think auto's are absolute crap
i have to drive them all the time and i hate it, it destroys the pleasure of driving
it's all about control, and with an auto you have less control.

I didn't start this thread, I just hi-jacked it and committed heresy with my idea. Are all VTECS (not R type) the same? I went looking on the net but could find no comparison lists.

no, there are a lot of variations as they developed them.... I can actually get a VTEC head to go on my SOHC that only does the inlet valves... www.honda-tech.com has lots of good discussions about them. Look for ZC, and JDM and B16... I just found this forum too, it looks OK http://honda.hybrids.jp/forum/wwwthreads.php
