So the first Mini Cooper engine, the 997 wasn't developed by Cooper for FJ racing?

No.
The Cooper Formula Junior team used engines supplied by BMC. Cooper didn't develop thier own engines, they used what BMC supplied.

The Formula Junior engines don't seem to share anything with the Mini Cooper engines. Different bore, different stroke and different capacity. (But I bet the rocker cover fitted)

True story... He was a Catholic Priest that played first grade Rugby League before leaving the priesthood and becoming an entertainer. He appeared on TV as a singer (while still a priest!) and eventually becoming a furniture salesman.
