check that it's all lubricated and moving freely inside before you go changing things.... I doubt it's been disassembled for 36 years, and wouldn't be working as freely as it did when it was new

Did you come up with a whole new electric gizmo yourself, or use a generic kit that adapts to the shaft for the handle? The key to the winder system in mini is as Simon says, things moving freely, but also the condition of the regulator spring.
If it's rusted, corroded, broken, mssing, then the window will effectively be heavier,
and much harder to wind.

it could be that your window is going up on a very slight angle and gripping on the window rubber and or the window rubber requires lubricating (when i worked for another company we used a clear window lubricant in the channel called LY70 it is quite thick and apparently expensive and not to sure you can buy it over the spare parts counter), try silicone lube (pressure pack) and see if this helps first.

It could just be the gear and lever ratio for the window operation.
A mini has about 2 turns of the handle to get the window to the bottom, whereas
climb into any other car and you're turning all afternoon.
(okay that probably because one uses gears and levers, the other a track and wire spool, but there is a point in there).

It is worth checking the nylon roller on the end of the winder mechanism they sometimes wear flat spots on the outer part of the roller
