Hey all,
I was given an old 3 synchro gearbox in exchange for a carbie a little while ago and I started to pull it down the other day.
Its casting number on the box was 22A1522 and the Laygear had 22G232 stamped on to it. I spoke to a bloke and he thinks it may be a cooper"S" gear box.
Is this true of is he just pulling my leg
I thought Cooper"S" casting numbers were 22G333 or 22G1128.

Regards LUCAS ENGLAND

Nope it's not an S box, well those gears aren't- S laygears were 22G1100 (3 synchro) and 22G1040 (4 synchro).

<edit> the case number could be S, that number was used on the last of the 3 synchro boxes. But yours has got the wrong gears inside...

Early Mk1 S had rubber unis, like all Minis then.

It did have hardy spicers, but the bloke that had it before me wanted the diff and spicers so he took them out before gave me the box.
Dont even know the Diff ratio that it had in it!

:D

According to my books this is a Mk1 Cooper S box and gears from early Jan 1966. It could be either hardies or uni's.

The following link gives some interesting info:

Sounds like a good swap to me!

According to my MINI workshop manual:
From Cooper S Engine No. 9F/SA/Y 31001 There was a change to the gearbox with the introduction of stronger "B" series gears and a change in laygear with the normal mini 22G231 and the Cooper "S" 22G232.
I have one of these gearboxes sitting in the garage which came from my Cooper S' which has 1/69 on the wiper motor.

Therefore your gearbox is a MK1 Cooper gearbox. :)
