hey guys,

i want to run in a practice day coming up, but am unable to find any information regarding scrutineering etc.

what things should i expect them to lookk at and check, also whats the exhaust legalities for this track? ie i want to run unmuffled , just a pipe, will this suffice?

cheers jamie

While I don't know specifically about Mallala, just about every track in Australia requires a silencer of some sort. Its as much for the track officials as anything else.

Is it a private practice or a practice session for a race or just a track day.

For a private practice just about anything goes - even road registered cars although some safety considerations are necessary - like a helmet and fire proof gear. They rarely check cars for private practice unless something obvious is noted. Once you sign on at the office you are pretty much left to yourself. Mostly you need a CAMS licence to sign on though.

If this is your first time on a track before you go out on the track wander around and make yourself known to any one else who may be using the track at the same time. Mainly so they know you are new to it. There are some very fast cars around and you will be suprised just how much is the speed difference.

Once they know you are new they should then give you a wider berth and more care. With these other faster cars the only tip is to watch your rear vision mirrors constantly because a fast car in the distance will be beside you next time you go to look.

Have fun
Mike

yeah at the private practice they dont scrutineer your car, you could run a straight pipe, there'll likely be race cars and stuff there that will be a lot louder than a mini,

and yea all the advice above is good.

ring the track and check, all tracks have noise limits and it does not matter if its private practice or what the track will have a permanent noise metre and if you turn up and the car is to noisy you will be told to go home, and no one wants to waste your time but they are not going to let you run without a muffler

I agree with Jon and Mike, ring them and check first.

Mufflers are a funny thing at race tracks. It does not matter how quiet the car is, the rules state that it MUST run a muffler. So you just slip a muffler over a straight bit of pipe and clamp it up!
If the track has a noise meter you must not go over the limit or you will be thrown off the track.

The CAMS Licence is the big problem at a lot of tracks for private practice. CAMS want drivers to have a full competition licence to private practice at a lot of tracks. A basic licence (or whatever they call it this year) is not good enough at some tracks.
I can't drive at Oran Park or Eastern Creek anymore as I refuse to let CAMS have any of my money. I used to have a CAMS Internation licence but it counts for nothing at private practice unless it is current.

I can go out to Wakefield Park and buy a licence on the day that will last a year and drive as much as I want! They don't have the same restrictions as some other tracks.

at mallala you buy a day license if you dont have one.

with your car jamie you shouldnt have a problem with noise limits, but it makes good sense to have a hotdog or some such.

The last time I was at Mallala (circa 1968) the food was crap but the entertainment made up for it esp. when Allan Moffat lost the lead in his Lotus Cortina when he got a flat and his pit crew got a trolley jack jammed underneath the car. AM was spewing : :) :D

I wouldn't worry about doing a practice day my self ... you are better off doing a sprint with Me , steve , and a few other mini's...

The main reason is at a practice day you will be on the track with cars ranging from 1 minute 14 to cars doing 1 minute 50 ... alot a pro race drivers use practice days to test there race cars ..

At a sprint all the cars are grouped into cars of the same speed .. so you wont get a full blown race car passing you on the outside coming into the northern hair pin..Which is what was happening a few years Back when the boys had Battle day... it is alot more controlled in the sprint with a briefing for first time drivers to the track and there will always be someone faster in front and someone slower behind, .. Ambulance and firies on hand incase the worst will happen.. Plus there are people there to help with your car and give you driving hints..

It is also cheaper to run a sprint ($75) as compared to $100.. But you will have to join the msca which is $20 for the year

For the practice day you will need a a car thats not leaking oil everywhere and your Battery tied down ...
The sprint you need that plus a few extras ... A battery triangle .. Current fire extiguisher a oil catch can ( oil bottle) Two litre capacity ... and secondary bonnet catch (very easy).. A secondary throttle return spring ..
and contact over your headlights... Seems like a lot but it only takes a few hours to prepare a car ..

Hope this helps mate it's a bag of fun and very adictive :P
