I have a small problem that I think needs some adjustment but don't know which order to try things in.

I replaced the spark plugs, leads and did an oil change at the weekend. Didn't realise how rough it was running before until I did this and now it sounds so much smoother and doesn't get bogged down pulling in the low gears or when cold like it was doing.

Following the recommendations in the spark plug thread from a couple of weeks back I tried going 1 spark plug hotter and got the NGK BP5EY rather than the BP5ES (I also got some of those in case I want to switch back).

The result is generally much better but I am getting a slight, occassional 'surge' or stutter in acceleration. It doesn't happen often and it's really quite gentle, but definitely noticeable.

One thing I know for sure that's wrong is that the idle is set too high.

What else should I be considering? Carb? Ignition timing? Going back to colder plugs?

Are you still running points? If so, when was the last time they were replaced? Consider replacing them and also re do the timing. Also check oil levels in your SU dash pot/s

Sorry, probably should've mentioned - It's a Rover and it's got an electronic distributor - (which i didn't even realise until i bought some points to do a replacement last year - removing the dizzy cap to find no points!)

Don't know much about carb stuff - I was thinking this might the time to learn more though. :)

I was thinking when reading the first post "isn't weevels car an injection model?"
in which case dizzy and carb are basically non-existent.

I's got a carb, but I never knew whether the dizzy was original or not - it's had 2 replacement engines since I got it and last year was the first time i'd bothered looking at it! I have no idea which ancilliaries were kept from engine change to engine change, they weer both done in a rush on my behalf and long before I knew to care about such things...

Now as to which carb, I don't actually know, just whatever the standard 90-92 cooper had before they changed to SPI, single but don't know the size or type. It's one of those things that I am hoping to find out more about....

EDIT: Googled a little - I'm guessing it's a 1.75" SU HIF - seems to be what it would've come with anyway

I thought that the "Y" and "S" would identify different "configuration" plugs.

The number (5 in this case) indicates the that range. ???

Cheers, Ian

Did you check the plug gap before chucking them in?
Although this is probably a long shot...

Yeah, plug gap was checked.

I'll take a look at the weekend, might swap over to the other plugs and see what difference there is.

My suggestions;

What condition is the coil in?

You running a fuel filter?
