I have been looking into the legalities of converting or in my case registering heavily modifies vehicles. I have two extended 6 wheel Mokes & two shortened Mokes. All conversions were not done by me however I am looking at beginning restoration work on these vehicles and want to make sure I am not doing so in vain. The concern I have is that I spend the time and the money restoring and find out none can ever be registered then it will be somewhat pointless.

The question I have is does anyone know of any shortened or extended Mokes that have legally been registered and complianced?. If so can they contact me and let me know what avenues I should be looking down. I would be happy even if I could only use them on a limited or club registration.

Yeah I did print off a copy of the QLD Modifications booklet but it mentions nothing specific to these type of vehicles.

I think the best investment you could make at this point is to pay an engineer to come and inspect the vehicles you want to restore, and give you an assessment of their legality on-road.

Unless you bought the cars with engineer's certificates to begin with, you're going to need them to get them registered regardless of whether you made the modifications, or just restored them. Get an engineer involved early and save yourself the pain later.

simon k found a shorty moke registered in Wodonga (I think VIC registered) and posted photos earlier in the year. Shmoke I think was the title or the numberplate, can't recall. Search in spotted.

I have seen a 6 wheeled moke registered in NSW , I think there was even one on here somewhere with a motorbike on the back but can't find it now . I would imagine the 6 wheeler would be easier to do than the shorty as it is only extending the chassis basically which is commonly done with utes etc . not sure how the authorities view shortening a chassis though , at least you could argue the moke is a commercial vehicle .

think yuo will find anything goes pre 1970 before ADR-27 you may need engineers report for work , check with MV dept in your state, before outlaying any $$$$$$

shortening is done pretty often with mini trucks

A friend has had his convertible shorty (an 850 with the roof and about 30 inches from the wheelbase removed) fully road registered for over a year now in NSW.

He had to get full rego because you can't get concessional rego for modified vehicles. (':?')

It required an engineers inspection/approval. Can't see there's be an issue with doing less to a Moke. Mind you, States set their own rules.....

I too haven seen a 6 wheeled moke at the Gold Coast registered , dont know if its engineered though...

I have seen a shorty moke registered in QLD but no pics or details. As it's been suggested get an engineer to have a look at all of them and go from their.

Thanks for the input all, it looks like I need to find myself an engineer to make a house call and have a casual look at all 4 so they can tell me which ones if any are worth doing and what I need to do.

Does anyone know an engineer in Brisbane that might do this?.

there is a 6 wheel ute in north brisbane somewhere i have seen it a few times.
