The car I have bought has a close ratio all synch box in it. Now I don't think this is going to be a starter for driving long distances in unless it has a bloody loud audio system in it or i arrange ear defenders. So my question is this....is the Cooper S drive train different to all the other minis, so I can start looking for a box.

Chris,

Close Ratio or Straight Cut?? Close ratio helical gears won't be any noiser than 1000's of other Minis.....you will stil get a headache (from the sweet A Series engine noises , its drivetrain and induction roar!!).

If you mean't straight cut gears....then they aren't THAT much noisier in a road car with some sound deadening etc

all Iknow is that it is close ratio and it is bloody noisy. I cannot remember Mini gearboxes being this noisy. Did they use synchros in straight cut boxes?

Chris,
Yes most SCCR boxes do have synchro, except dog boxes.

The noise is mostly from the straight cut drop (primary) gears. You could take them out and fit helicals, keeping the SC gears in the box- but if you are going to be using it on the road mostly, I'd build another box.
I'm doing a Mini K box for Mike at the moment, it now has S 1st motion shaft and S (22G1040) cluster gear, with pot joint output shafts.
Your SCCR box is worth $$$ if you wanted to sell it.

Nothing special really about a Mk2 S box- it's a Mini K box with different 1st motion shaft and cluster, Hardy Spicer S drive flanges and a 3.44 diff. 8)

Thanks Kev. I think I will flog it. Seems to be a total waste to be running on the street and the 1st gear is to long for towing with. So what box do you reckon I need? Before everyone gets to excited we are nowhere near getting it out of the car due to me being ill, then having an operation in March with full recovery sometime in the later part of the year, that is after I finish the deck around the house and build a cover over the pool and repair the pool deck. I calculate 3.30pm, June 12th, 2008 should see it out of the car if nothing else goes wrong.

If you are going to tow with it, I'd use either either a stock Mini K or Cooper S. Mini-K is slightly shorter 1st-2nd-3rd, a little more gap to 4th. Not much- there's only 1 tooth difference on 1st motion shaft.
Heaps of these Mini K gears about- same parts as Clubbie rodchange (except reverse idler).
You could either just swap gearsets, or sell the SCCR box for $$$ and buy/build another.
