The easyout should have been the answer, and still might remain so if you can get the broken one out. You've made a classic mistake, it's been made a thousand times before you as well by just about every person who has had reason to need an easyout.

Once you get the existing busted easyout removed, repeating the excercise with a high quality easyout (P&N, Sutton etc, NOT the supercrap type) and a little patience, persistance and time should see it removed.

The trick with the easyouts is that they are very brittle but very tough steel. The easyout will bite into whatever you are trying to move, but cannot withstand sudden shock movements or off centre twisting (caused by using a shifter instead of a two handed tap wrench for example ). You've just got to be careful when using them. A very useful and essential tool, but certainly not a tool to be rushed or used poorly.

I guessed you had, everyone gets to make that mistake once...

Then give it another go. Super carefully and remembering to keep the twisting directly down the shaft. Do not apply any bending load to the easy out.

You know at what point it snapped last time, so don't exceed this. work slowly and carefully. It will move eventually.
It screwed in, it will screw out.
