I had the front end of the mini looked at today by the mechanic at one of our servos, he showed me I had a heap of play in my LHF wheel. You can move it by hand probably 3 or 4mm in each direction (Direction they turn when being turned by steering wheel.).

The play seems to be coming from inside the boot of the rack, all the ball joints and tie rod ends are fine. The rack doesnt move on the other side, just on the LHF side.

Am I looking at a new rack ? (I don't want to reco this one.)

Or can parts be repaired inside the boot with the rack still in the car ?

If its a new rack, then I order one tommrow and it goes in next week.

After reading through 23 pages of search results on here, I now understand that the rack HAS to come out.

It's most likely the ball joint at the inner end of the tie rod. It has shims and can be adjusted provided the joint is still OK. Don't necessarily need a reco rack. It would be a terrible job to attempt with the rack in the car. I'd be pulling it out.

I would agree with John on this IF it is the old tooling racks.
We have a newer type rack- (some others may have it) but the tooling and quality is much better:
