With Mokes being both 2 and 4 seaters how many were made of each?

Also has anyone gone through engineering to make 2 into a 4 seater!?

thanks all.... :?

mokes generally all 2 seats from the factory with rears as an option.
the holes should be in the back for the seats and seatbelts.
therefore no engineering needed if using genuine seats.
the only thing needed would be the centre bracket that holds the centre of the 2 seats together.

as far as i know, it is quite easy to make it a 4 seater, as long as you use the original mounts for the seats no engineering is needed, which makes things a little easy, as the front seats fit in the back aswell, although if they have a head rest the top wont fit over them.

check out the forums at http://www.moke.com.au

theres a fair few posts on this subject..

Whether you need an engineers cert or not is a common debate on the Moke forum and open to interpretation in different states. Some have actually had their cars engineered as four seaters. Some Mokes probably had rear seats fitted by dealers anyway.

Gareth, in Adelaide you'll need a seating inspection at regency park if you want to change the seating capacity... this is a ROADWORTHY and legal aspect.

We do aftermarket seats at Willshires, and have developed a seat for the Moke. Give me a call at work and I can discuss this / send some pics thru if you like.

Regards,
Will.

As mentioned - does cause some discussion. Mokes were classed as a commercial vehicle - got it around some of the ADR's. All the compliance plates I have seen say "seating capacity 2" I have two mokes that have engineers compliance plates making them 4 seaters and I understand both cars were ex-hire cars and the 4 seating compliance was more an insurance requirement to fit seatbelts in the rear seat and satisfy any legalalities in that area.
Now people are going to say "I got mine registered as a 4 seater and it passed inspection at motor reg etc etc " - we all know how many knowledgeable inspectors are out there don't we?

I'm just happier there is an official plate on mine saying 4 seater

Technically the rear seat in a moke does fit the bolt holes, but it is a bench and does not have any centre bolts (no bracket to join 2 seats).
That said, mine is stamped 2 seats, and has 2 low back 'front' seats bolted in the rear, and I just drilled extra holes in the seat frames to bolt the centre to the floor.
It is already registered in SA so I don't really care....

contrary to some information posted......
if you use standard moke seats , there is a factory issue bracket which has a single hole at the rear (to match the single hole in the centre of the floor) and a clip to go over the two adjoining seats (in the centre).
as this is the factory part, it meets ALL compliance standards.

there endeth todays lecture.lol.

Hey Gazza, I'm sure you are correct, but my 1970 has 2 holes that allow the front seats to be bolted at the back, but the seat rail holes are a few inches forward of the floor section (where I guess they made the braket to fit?) so there are 3 holes that line up for each seat, but I have seen original bench seats in the rear.

Thanks for the lecture... its all about sharing information.

exactly right. that single hole is for the bracket,
makes getting your 4 seater a damn sight easier to rego if you use factory parts.
there is nothing for them to argue about.

all they care about is the seating capacity stamped on the compliance plate.
helps if you used standard parts, but they may still want it engineered as it is not standard for that car

The seat will also need to be identifiable.
By this, if it is aftermarket, it must have a manufacturing 'code' or part number they can refer to, to identify it.
It's quite stupid, and often bizzare, but that's the way it is!

If they aren't happy with it for whatever reason (non-genuine) - they may request an engineers report.
