This speedo is driving me nuts... Put in the new speedo gear and cable but it still doesn't work.

I put the gearbox end of the cable onto a drill and the speedo turns but once it is connected to the gearbox it just won't work, so now I am thinking it might be the wormdrive inside the box that is the problem???

I bet that will be a fun job to fix!!!!! :(

Are you sure that the cable doesn't go through too many turns? I.e. could it be binding because it is too long and thus has tight curves in it - which aren't apparent when you have it plugged into a drill?

My 2c.

Checked all that 1018cc and all is ok there..

I can put my finger into the speedo hole in the gearbox and feel the wormdrive but I can turn it with my finger and I don't think that should happen?

Your correct there it shouldn't turn, it sounds like something is wrong inside your gearbox...

Maybe I should explain a bit more then, my logic suggests that as the speedo worm drive gear is mechanically linked to the 3rd motion shaft, ouput gear, diff and wheels, that if you can turn the worm gear (without the rest moving) then something in that chain is broken.

From what you have said I would assume that worm drive gear must have somehow come lose or moved so that now it turns freely and is no longer linked to the third motion shaft. This would explain why the cable works fine but still you speedo doesn't work...

A way to check this may be to push the car on flat ground and feel if the drive gear turns. Working backwards from 1280 turns per mile;
=1280/1600
=0.8 turns per m
The gear should turn about 0.8 revolutions per meter traveled, so if it doesn't then you have found the problem :)

And if thats the problem then it would be an engine out job really and I think you may be able to change the gear and inspect it without splitting the gearbox...

You can fish all this out with the box in the car... just take off the little oval plate on the end cover. :wink:

You make it sound so easy Doc... But I bet I can't see it or get at it without taking half the motor apart?

You can get it once it's jacked up, and the engine mount bracket and the alloy bracket is off.

Huh, I didn't think of that, I was thinking to get the spacer off you would have to remove the engine. The in car way would be the way to go, no messing around with drive shafts, etc.
