Hey guys, drive a 72 clubby. On the drivers side seat belt there is a metal bracket which basically sits the reel away from the door pocket. However on the passenger side there is no such thing so the reel needs to be on an angle for the door shut, this angle also means that the belt cannot come free from the reel meaning the belt can only be put on with the door open and reel facing vertically.
Where can I get a similar bracket to sit the inertial reel away from the door pocket?

Some photo's of it might help as it sounds like an aftermarket fitment , if it was factory both sides should have the same (and from memory in Leyland mini's retractible belts were fitted inside the rear storage bin in a reinforced compartment ) . Best to talk to a licenced belt fitter about it .

inertia reels weren't factory in '72 were they?

sports is correct, they were mounted inside the rear storage bins - I think they came up in the same place an earlier car has the ash trays in the back

Definately not factory, i'll post up pics when I get the chance to upload them. I think they came in after 72'. THe two seat belts are actually different to eachother so they came in different kits. Obviously the driver side was a bit more mini specific. Do many minis have the reels mounted here aftermarket or otherwise? THe guy at mini spares in Padstow hadn't seen them mounted like this before...

why not mount them inside of the bins? its a much nicer fit and not as complicated to step over to get into the back

Because inside the bins are not reinforced to handle the stresses involved in an accident . This one is mounted on the factory seatbelt mount which is reinforced , mount them anywhere else and you run the risk of them tearing out in an accident and turning a minor bingle into a serious injury/death . If you want to move them (not just the original poster but anyone), consult a licenced seatbelt fitter as your neck isn't worth the risk .

They're mounted in the bins in a Rover, I wonder if there's extra bracketry or strengthening involved, as you say, there be experts in the field, on this very forum even - Is it willy and/or Stuwey who are in the seatbelt/trimming game?

Clubbies usually have reinforcement in the bins dont they? Seifers ones look aftermarket.

Can someone post some photos showing the inertia reals mounted inside the bins on the early Clubman?
Mine have been mounted outside the bins, on an angle - they are not going back there as there is no strength.

The later ones that have the inertia unit inside the bin are mounted to the inner sill.
If you wanted to fit the units inside the bin you need to remove the outer sill and add a reinforcing plate in the correct place and refit the outer sill. Then you would need an engineer to sign it off.

They do not mount to the bin.

Looks to me like the bracket on your reel is part of the unit. Probably from some random car. You could always check out what some of the wreckers have, you might be able to find a good seatbelt with a similar bracket

Later ones have another mounting point, yes it's inside the bin/B pillar but is really attached to the inner sill, behind the original (which is still there even on these late cars).
I have inertia reels in my `70 Mini, with no spacer brackets needed. I just drilled another hole in the reel's mounting plate, closer to the reel, this moves the reel to below the door bins.
