How do i check for leaks?? Does the high rpm mean that it will continue sputtering after its switched off?

Grab a can of Carb-R-Clean or something similar and spray it around the base of the carb and around the throttle shaft listen for an increase in revs.

Dont you mean decrease in revs? If you spray water/carb cleaner, etc on a vac leak wont it increase the liquid (reduce air) therefore drop revs?

The way I have always found air/vac leaks is run the motor and put the hose on it (not when its 90deg hot motor, but just started up. that way you know your getting it sorted.

With the whole 'lift the pedal' idea - it only works if your cable is not working well (ie/ sticky) as mentioned above - if the cable sticks - then thats a prob... in normal case you can lift the pedal and it wont actually drop revs.

Best thing to try is run it, get it to when it sits on 1400rpm and leave it on, pop the bonnet and manually push the throttle to close it - if you can close it, then its either sticking butterfly or the throttle cable too tight to begin with... or the sticky cable.
If its closed as much as it can be (ie/ cant manually close it more) then its prolly vaccum leak.

Do you have a vacuum advance on the distributor? and in the intake? If you pull the hose off the instake and block with your finger do the revs drop?

I would probably say if its a leak its either vacuum line or the intake/inlet manifold against the head gasket leaking.
