I think I got ripped off...

I sourced a replacement wiper motor and replaced it because the old one wasn't working. Only thing is one of the mounting bolts was missing (old motor had a self tapper) and I lost the circlip and washer that goes on top of the linkage in the motor.

Rego was also overdue, so I asked this name which is often recommended on here to install the motor with replacement bits (bolt washer and circlip) which I could have got at bunnings for $15 tops and do my pink slip.

He charged me $110. Is that reasonable? He claims the bolt hole was stripped and he had to retap it. I'm annoyed that I didn't dispute it at the time.

Hourly rate adds up. They are fiddly suckers. If i was going to do it for you, i'd charge you more for pain and suffering!



Seriously, doesn't sound unfair.

Besides "Caveat Emptor" You should have asked how much, and said if you look like needing to do more than $X work call me.

Just had a physio work on my back for 1/2 an hour = $48 - 15 minutes with my cardiologist after waiting 1 hour 20minutes = $160 - half hour examination and clean at the dentist = $132

If he had to repair a thread, fit the motor, supply the bolt etc and do a pink slip then it was a fair and reasonable price. I'm aware most small mechanic shops charge a fair bit less then dealerships, but i know all of the dealerships around brisbane are pretty much $100 hourly rate and up. So really if he had to fiddle around a bit i wouldnt be complaining

Ok then that's alright. Had a bit of a bee in my bonnet because I've been ripped off by others a bit lately. Shoulda just DIYed.

I would say it sounds like a good price. You say that it was $15 in parts, and 30ish dollars for pink slip. that means he has only charged you about an hours labor, that sounds like a great deal.

Hahah.. that is bang on the money There are plenty of people who think mechanics rip them off but the others are right labour time is costly. People pay accountants $150 to do their tax each year even though most can do E-Tax for free... are they being ripped off too?

I would say that's cheap if it was retapped - why don't you check shouldn't be hard to verify if you're concerned about it.

^^^ That'd be me then. I have a mechanic who I take the cars to, and he's (a) understanding and (b) experienced in older cars. I trust him a lot, he's never put me wrong.

So sometimes it's just a case of finding a really good mechanic who knows older cars. They needn't be a 'mini' mechanic, as long as they're over 40 they did all their learning on minis back in the day and there's nothing special about a mini's mechanical system. In fact, it should be a breath of fresh air from changing out a 4WD Hilux clutch (bitch of a job I understand).

i would say thats about right. add up his labour,rego,retaping that thread it will add up. the regos now can cost anywhere between $20-$31.70 (which is what we charge at work). sounds pretty good.

but the question is, is the wiper working? are u happy with the job? so if u are then its money well spent.

Well the wiper works at one speed only and doesn't park, same as I gave it to him, already bolted in and connected up. I would have used a self tapper for the remaining bolt and inserting the circlip takes 2 minutes.

For me it's a waste of 70 bux. Ah well, lesson learnt. Tell them exactly what you want and for what price.

is there 2 types of motors? one 1 speed and the other 2 speed? and if the motor was already on the car then why did he work on it at all? plus he wouldnt just use a self taper because its unprofessional. how much did he charge for rego?.
