OIL companies and petrol retailers in NSW will be forced by law to replace regular unleaded petrol with ethanol blends by 2011.

That is totally ridiculous. They can't even keep up with demand as it is!!!

I got this reply from Burlen Fuel Systems in the UK...
Quote:
Dear Sir/Madam,

all our new SU products are compatible with blended fuels up to £10 (I think they mean 10%!)

Kind regards,
Customer Services
Burlen Fuel Systems Limited - The SU and AMAL Carburetter Companies

So the new parts are OK, it is the old ones we have to worry about.

I would be most worried about the crap rubber hose in the Bling braiding...
I've used Dayco USA fuel hose for years with unleaded, and it is still supple. Dunno about with E10, maybe I should submerge a sample for product testing.

I used to fill a Mt Franklin 600ml bottle with avgas to use as "starting fluid"* but since I am no longer racing I just fill the bottle with unleaded.
I noticed a big difference... I could leave the bottle full of avgas indefinitely and it would always look the same. But with unleaded the bottle would slightly collapse and the fuel would slowly evaporate out of the sealed bottle.

*By starting fluid I mean I could fill the float bowls on an SU to prime the carby or use a syringe to fill a Holley or just tip it down the throat of the carby.

Some fuel hose that works fine with petrol will go soft and fall apart when used with diesel. It is horses for courses but it would be better if there was less secrets about what is ok and what needs care.

the whole ethanol in fuel thing in Australia came about because the sugar farming lobby in QLD had the ear of John Howard. no economic or environmental data were properly analysed, nor engineering data. the only thing that mattered was that the sugar farmers were given a guaranteed market for their crop and the company that makes the ethanol from the sugar was given a subsidy to make the end product cheap enough to use as a bulker in petrol.

sad but true.

In NSW the biggest ethanol plant uses grain not sugar to make ethanol.

yeah and with the drought increasing grain prices, by reducing supply as well as artificially increasing demand for the grain, the ethanol from this source also had to be subsidised.

I have received a reply from the manufacturer of the carby kit that I used (top marks to MadMatt for recognising quality products when he sees them. 8) )
They have said that my fuel hose failed due to excessive heat. Apparently the 4km round trip that I do every day and the occasional 80kph flog up the freeway has caused the hose to fail from excessive heat.
This may have been caused by removing a heat shield (nope!) or fitting extractors (nope again!) and that I should insulate the hose to prevent it happening again. (even bigger nope!)

I have sent them a stern reply. :x

I think this is to do with the anti-vapor lock additives in av-gas, but don't quote me on it...

I just got another reply from the manufacturer of the carby kit. They say that they have been using the same hose from the same supplier for over 20 years. They are wondering if it could be the fuel that is the problem.

I am wondering if hose that was probably designed for leaded petrol over 20 years ago is the right hose for todays fuels. :?
