hi guys,

ive had a search around in the old posts but i didnt have much luck; i apologise if this topic has been raised several times before.

i want to replace the 4sp gearbox in my '65 morris mini deluxe. it has an 1100cc engine.

can anyone please point me in the direction of suppliers of reconditioned gearboxes, a workshop that will do an exchange, or perhaps just a supplier of aftermarket gearboxes that might suit my mini with minimal (or zero) modifications? i am located in sydney. i can do the swap myself but i am not interested in rebuilding my current gearbox due to time constraints.

any help would be greatly appreciated as i am slightly lost as to where to go next with this.

cheers

In the how to section there is a list of mini businesses, ring around and see what they will do.

You would be paying a premium for an exchange box if they do one as they would not be sure how bad yours is and what work needs to be done.

It should not take them long to recondition.

Contact Greig at Mini Classic Ermington 9874 7211

Mini King Narellan 4648 1233

Mini Spares Padstow 9774 3366

Be warned it can cost between 1-2k+ to recondition your box.

There are no aftermarket boxes for the mini, well any that are cheaper than the stocker there are straight cut dog boxes and 5/6speeds and the like, but they are mega $$$

hey minimad,

thanks! i'll be sure to check through the contacts you supplied and see what i can get.

i forgot to ask, are there any reputable wreckers around sydney that might be able to supply used gearboxes for cheaper than the cost of a rebuild?

are there any common (or not so common) retro-fitments of other makes/models of gearbox onto the 1100cc engine?

and can anybody let me know what the actual manufacturer of this gearbox is?

cheers

There are no specific wreckers that supply mini parts, most of the shops mentioned buy up all the cars and parts in the area to service their needs, hence you are best contacting a mini specialist workshop.

As the mini gearbox shares it's oil with the engine, it's a very bad idea to put a used box on a motor as you don't know what condition it is in and any metal swarf from the box will circulate through the motor and quickly wear your motor. There are very few cars that have and engine and gearbox which share the oil in the sump and there are no other gearboxes available that retrofit onto the A-Series engine that i know of.

As the car design is 40 years old, the gearbox is an in house design by BMC (British Motor Corporation) later taken over by leyland. You pretty much take what you can get these days with such an old car.

If you have the original box it will not have synchro on 1st gear, you might want to get a full synchro box while you are at it
