OK so i'm after a straight cut gearbox.

What do they cost roughly?
Gears/casing/layshaft... all that crap.
Rough prices so i can get saving.

Thanks.

BIIIIIIIIIIG willy.

Gearset here alone (new) is about $1100+ for 3 synchro, $1600+ for 4 synchro.
Bit cheaper if you bring from UK. 8)
S/H- if you find one don't pay more than 1/2 price, and inspect carefully for wear or damage.

Pardon the newbie question  , is there an advantage to having a straight cut over the stand box?

the gears are much stronger, takes the punishment of extreme extreme power and race motors with big torque..... instead of the teeth on the gears being cut on an angle (helical) so they mesh better when changing gears, the teeth are cut straight across, so they mesh better when engaged, which makes it a ning nong to change gears - they will always crunch

I wont be the one to give you the bad news about straight cut gears and their strength but I will tell you this little story.

I had to rebuild the SCCR box in my race mini, $4,000.00 later I thought I had something to handle the massive amount of power my 1380 was putting out (tongue in cheek). Next race meeting I ran into the guy who ownes the sister car to my mini and he is running a no expenses spared cross flow head race motor - Big horses. He told me he blew his geabox to shreads a year earlier and did not want to waste money on a new SCCR box so just installed a standard box, it was giving him no trouble and with a replacemnet cost of about $100.00 made better sense.

My advice would be to spend you money elsewhere. Also the last road car I had, had a straight cut box and the noise was unbearable at time and that was an open top car.

We put straight cuts in the sprite (the one with the cooper s engine) and straight up had problems with it jumping out of gear and tricky gear selection but after taking the box out and reassembling we have had no such woes.
Not sure what the exact problem was but its working fine now :)
I was also thinking of putting straight cut gears in the mini but i decided the expense was to great.

Scott
