Why only for show use ?? is it because he doesnt produce seatbelts to australian standards or some law like that?

Simon - I'd also be keen to know why for 'show only'.
So does SMK269 use webbing with the bumps like yours?

Photos of seat belts I had made up for my Mk2.

Webbing and stitching are sane as original. Hard part was to find good buckles.

The BMC Rosette is pressed into what appears to be tin foil and is actually raised from the base – a lucky find at an auto wreckers.

OK I know it's not original items, but whats wrong with putting retractable seatbelts in so you can do little things like reach the ignition key and turn the lights on; and put the original belts into storage so when and if you sell the car you can pass them on, just a thought because I was thinking of doing this becuase my belts seem to be original and honestley I don't trust them. They don't hold if you give them a good pull, they are simply warn out so they need replacing anyway. Whats everyones thoughts on this ?

I agree, that's why I run Klippan retractables in my `70 MiniMatic... I would put them in the wife's 67 S replica too- but it has early Clubby seats (minus headrests) and their tilt mechanisms foul on the reels. :x

it's just personal preference.... some cars are restored for 100+% originality and are trailered to events, never see the dark or the rain, so don't need switches flicked

I actually prefer non-retractable belts because I can strap myself in when motorkhana'ing (I'm not serious enough for a harness)

I'm restoring an ex-NSW Police MK II S and trying to get it as original as possible. It hurt somewhat to replace the leather rim steering wheel with the bus sized original and the Minilites/Yokohama's with Aquajets on steel rims but it isn't a daily driver and I'm trying to be as faithful as possible. If I can find a set of original seat belts I will be making sure they are serviceable before using them on the road. If that means replacing the webbing then so be it.
So I think my needs are a little different to the majority of Ausminiers where safety is paramount. If it was a regular driver then inertia reels would be top of the list.
P.S. If anyone has some original BMC belts/buckles that are surplus to requirements I'd love to talk.
P.P.S I've also installed the rubber switch extensions like NSW Police did so at least I can (just) reach the switches.

it's because new belts must use new buckles to meet the australian safety standards - new belts are only legal if they have the AS tag

I believe the person who makes the belts used to make them years ago, and now makes them for restorers - hence show only.... You've gotta expect that they'd be as good as the originals though

I'm very sure Gavin (smk269) has the webbing like mine - I did a search but couldn't find what he said about them

I've seen a quote of 250 dollars per belt to have them rewebbed :(

Not exactly the incentive one needs to reweb the belts for safety, especially if you are putting a rear set in as well for the passengers :(

hiya Doug

I managed to get some BMC buckles yesterday which you can have if you want gratis. No belts though, as they were too frayed.

cheers! jon

dunno how, but I totally missed your post - what did they cost you, and are they tagged as road legal?

winabbey (Doug?) - I just found this mob in WA, might be worth a call http://www.seatbeltsolutions.com.au/faqs.asp

edit: this is interesting too

Thanks Simon.

Here's another re-web company, also in Perth.

http://www.aircraftinteriors.com.au/mai ... belts.html

I'll keep looking for other approved re-web outfits on the east coast and post anything I find.

It's pretty clear that the ribbed webbing used by BMC is only to be used for 'show' so authenticity will have to make way for safety if the car is to be driven on the road.

Doug
