Can you have a look under the floor coverings , is there a covered hole near where the hump in the center of the floor meets the firewall (from the original magic wand gear lever) , is the current gear lever hole nicely cut with rounded corners or square corners ? Is there a hole in the raised pressing on the floor on the drivers side of the current gear lever (from the floor start button) ?

If it is an 850 that body number puts it very late 1963 so most likely registered 1964 , the details above will show if it is though the front valance says 850 to me .

The numbers on the shroud don't really match a normal Mini anyway.

Not quite Steve , I meant under the grey carpet again . Below your headlight dip button there would be a plate covering another gear shift hole if the body was an 850 originally . If it was a deluxe or K there won't be any hole there and the gear shift hole will have nice rounded corners whereas if it's an 850 they were often (not always though) cut roughly with an angle grinder so no rounded corners .

See if you can see from underneath as well , you should be able to see the hole from the floor starter to the right (looking from the back to the front of the car) of your current gear change if it's there from underneath . Also if there was a magic wand ger lever hole it will be obvious from underneath but you might have difficulty seeing past the gearshift housing .

Also have a look on the voltage regulator and fusebox as they normally have a date stamped on them and are normally not changed like the windscreen wiper motor can be .

These photo's might help explain what I'm (and John) are asking about ,

In this one the green mini is an 850 and has the full width valance that was used up until mid 1964 (I think). The blue one is a 1968 van and show's the later version with the cutouts to let air in to cool the brakes .

Image

In this one the green B-pillar is again the 850 and is for sliding windows . The blue one is again the 1968 van with windup windows . You can see the differnt screw positions for the top door catch and also the different shape of the panel between the door catch and the door guide below it .

Image

This show's the floor of an 850 (the rubber mat should look familiar to you John...)with the location of the floor starter and original gear lever along with the current location of your gearlever .
