Just down the road from my joint Ive noticed a white clubby has just appeared in someones driveway. It has 2 red S's on the bootlid? Is there such a thing? Or just an LS?

Yes there was an SS. It was a limited edition made in 1976. When they were a success they made the LS.

leyland made it as a limited edition model due to having too many 's' badges from the clubman 's'. they needed a new and improved car to boost sales.

They were virtually the same as the 998 LS , when they launched teh SS it was a very limited model and there was only to be 300 , then that turned into 500 and then they decided they couldn't keep a limited edition like that running over that number so brought out the 998 LS . I wouldn't mind an original SS to go with my poster as they are a rare car and were an example of Leyland trying something that worked for a change ...

If it is white, it is either not a genuine one, or has been repainted - with one exception.

Issue 15 of The Mini Experience has the full story, and the full specs, but basically, as a few have already said, it was a limited run of 500 cars to boost sales.

They were only available in Nutmeg (a dark brown metallic colour) and Omega Navy metallic. Both had gold stripes, with Mini SS at the rear of the stripes.

There was one white one made, with blue stripes.

The SS badges were because they had an abundance of S badges.

Lots more to the story, but yes, it was replaced with the Mini LS (998cc) because the car proved too popular for the limited run, and having promoted the SS as a limited edition of only 500 cars, they couldn't then keep making them, so the LS was born with basically the same spec.

The SS was the only Mini available standard with the ROH Contesta rims with shallow offset. The LS also had Contesta rims, but with normal offset.

I think I know that car Brad, was for sale round town a few months ago.

If it is the one, then its in bad need of a paint job and has rebuilt 1275 with 2 x 1.5" SU's, Cooper S discs and the jelly beans. In pretty good condition overall and drove very nice. I didn't take much notice of the badges but thought it had an LS interior installed, which if an SS, may be original.

A genuine SS should have "Mini SS" on the compliance plate.
It should have a cable release for the bonnet.
It should have dual horns, each with its own spot-welded bracket.

The other features like tinted glass, interior and so on are easily moved from car to car, but unless you were trying to make an LS look like an SS you are unlikely to get the first three right and you would still need an original SS compliance plate.

On the other hand, the lack of a vinyl roof means little as they usually caused rapid rusting. My own SS had the roof replaced and the sills patched when it was only ten or twelve years old. Most of the others I looked at in that era were in similar condition.

oops, correction - the roof and stripes were chocolate brown, not blue.

The car was built for the on-sight nurse at the factory, but nothing is known of its whereabouts now.

It would be fabulous if this was the car, but it is only a very slim chance after all these years.

Compliance plate - yes, should say Mini SS, and the chassis prefix should be 022D2S3M09. 022 refers to YDO22 (Mini Clubman); 2S refers to two-door saloon; 3 is third model (Mini SS - 1st model was Leyland Mini, 2nd was Mini S, 3rd was Mini SS, fourth was Mini LS - then the 1275LS had a different code altogether); M is for Manual; 09 is for 998cc engine.
