Hello you bunch of....well you.

Henry is broken for the first time , The thing you put the key in (ignition barrel??? switch???) is gone.

How do you replace it??? Can't see for the life of me how to remove and replace the thing.

Any advice from a bunch of you????

How do you mean it's gone Louis , did it fall apart ? On a clubbie you have to use a sharp pin punch and tap the round nut head (will look like a couple of rivets holding the barrel and lock to the steering collumn) in an anticlockwise direction to unscrew it . It is just a basic nut and bolt but they both have round heads so they are hard to unscrew to steal . the bolt end has a lug that locks into the steering lock body so you can't turn it , only the nut end (can't remember which end it is though) . then you just replace the whole unit , someone's bound to have one .

OK , never had one do that before .... It is the lock on the side of the steering collumn isn't it and not a roundy type in the center of the dash ? I'm sure you can still buy the barrel and key complete but it will be a LO cheaper to get a second hand one .

Yep, where you put the key in, next to the steering wheel on the stering column!!!

Sorry Henri, but you are up for a new ignition switch. There is a small barrel inside the switch that the key fits into and on the end of it is a T piece that slots into the switch in the bottom of the housing. What has happened is the T piece has broken off, hence the key just keeps going around. As per previous posts recently, mention has been made of John Smidt at Mini King having heaps of them.

If the key goes round and round, the lock guts are stuffed.
Best option is to chop it off buy a secondhand one swap it over, not really easy (depending on your ability of course!), as you need to take out the 'headless bolts'.

You can drop the steering column down from the lower dash rail and drill the tops of the bolts out or if you have a small angle grinder and cutting wheel you can cut through the join of the ignition barrel bracket and bolts as you wont need to cut deep enough to hit the outer steering column. (please note that doing it this way is reccommended out of the car due to sparks and various substances that may ignite! carpet, seats, fuel vapours, etc, etc)

Is that steering column we pulled out that van good enough to use? Just use the whole column.

Before using a steering column from a van, make sure that they are the same as there are two different length columns that have steering locks attached.

A simple way of removing the headless bolts is to get a good file and file two flats on opposite sides so that a small open ender will fit. Done this many a time.

I usually cut a slot with a dremmel tool and undo with a screwdriver.
To refit you do it up with the screwdriver and then solder up the slot so that it looks normal.

Well, quite proud of myself. Use the van column. Change it myself

Works a treat, the only problem i had is the key was rusted out, but my old key works perfectly , is this normal???
