--<<START RANT>>--

Purchased a mini Black book on Ebay for a measly 10 bucks.

the guy wants 16.00 postage to get it from Sydney to Melbourne!!

I hate when you think you get a bargain and you get bent over like that!!
Should be compulsory to advertise postage costs.

do you not ask him for a postage calculation before you purchased it?

Aust Post charges seem to have sky-rocketed. Now that outlets are "franchised" they seem to charge as much as they can get away with.

I would ask him to post it in an Australia Post overnight bag for $7.00! If he refuses, let him know that you will pay the $16.00 and that you will then report him to Ebay for unfair trading. 8)

It cost me $11 to send an Elmo Live to Canberra from Brisbane. How big is this bloody book?

Many ebay sellers now charge a huge fee for 'postage and handling' because the do not have to pay ebay commission on that part of the total cost thus increasing their profit. Whenever I sell on ebay I advertise that I do not do this and only charge postage at cost. I also buy items and am careful to check the postage cost before bidding. If it is unclear then send the seller a question. There is even a drop down box titled 'question about postage'. As they say "buyer beware". As a seller it pays to check the postage cost too. I quoted $30- to send a large box to Darwin. This was a guess on what I thought the box weighed. When the person bought it and I went to the post office the postage was $83- so I lost out big time. It can go wrong both ways. I learnt my lesson. Cheers.

As stated above, the best thing to do is ask before you buy.

There's a calculator on the Aust Post website for parcel cost estimations at:

http://www1.auspost.com.au/pac/

It comes in handy, especially when selling.

When buying stuff on Ebay you also have to consider where the person selling lives. Sometimes it is not just the Australia post fee we have to pay for but also a small fee added to cover costs for the travel distance a seller might have to travel to get to a post office. They have all the rights in the world to do that. Like we all know fuel is not free. I sell a few things on Ebay and I always try and be fair and charge just the Australia post fee. The other thing one has to look at is the fact that when you pay by Paypal the seller gets charged The ebay listing fee and another approx 3% of the total including the Postage fee out of the total price paid by buyer. People buying seem to also disregard the fact the most buyers like me suggest that their prefered way of payment is direct bank deposit the reason for that the Paypal fee is too high. I still think that buying certain stuff on EBay is cheaper than Ringing around or driving from supplier to supplier to find what you are looking for. But unfortunately costs have to be covered. Happy ebaying guys. Oh..... and buy some more Electrical Bits from me I only charge a fair postage fee.

I did ask. Sent a message but he never replied.
I really wanted the book and will pay it if I have to but its just shitty to charge that when I can post the same thing for half that. A mini black book for 26.00 is still cheap i guess

I understand that it costs to get to the post office and about the fee's. this guy has asked for direct deposit so the additional fee's are irrelevant. Anyway, as a seller you should be taking all fee's and so forth into consideration when pricing your items not setting prices low and when you don't get what you want jacking up the prices of postage.

It never pays to give someone a Negative feedback as you will get the same back and it will jeopardise your own name on Ebay. Best is to ask Questions and if like you said the person does not reply... Very simple answer. Do not deal with him. I spend hours on my PC answering questions for people and I try and do it in as much detail as possible.

With regards to the supposed ripoff by "franchisees", yes, it is happening. There is a certain postal outlet in Brisbane that is currently under investigation for this very thing. Be very suspicious if you are not given a receipt and if you feel ripped off, report it to Australia Post.

As for a $16 charge on a book, whilst it does seem excessive, as convertible mini has pointed out, there can be other expenses involved and the quote on ebay does stae posting and handling.

Generally anything I sell via the forum is posted by express post so that buyers are aware of postal costs and if the item has to be specially boxed, I include the packaging costs in the price of the item and quote the postal charges separately.
