Yes, that is the Mk1 Mini `collapsible' (well... bendable) steering column doing what it's designed to do.

<Edit> the persons survived.

will my clubby have one of those? I like the thought of it bending out of the way. Instead of skewering my lung.

Scott had a little incident with a coaster bus. Fortunately Scott and his mrs lived to see another day and Mini/s. He may wish to elaborate a little more if he see's this.

Coincidently, I broke my leg quite badly around the same time this happened and was in hospital for a week. I had quite a few people ringing me to ask if I was ok..... Everyone thought It was my car. A few people only heard on the grape vine that I was in hospital and thought it was me....!

I always find it encouraging/amazing that every time you see a photo of a mini that's had a head on collision, the subframe has tipped back as it has with that car, the motor pretty much stays put - I don't know if it was in Sir Alec's head when he sketched it, but it's a bloody good thing

I have a permanent shoulder injury from my accident - my right collarbone is mostly detached from my shoulder joint, it makes a neat party trick to make it poke up

The Clubbie one will work even better. They changed the whole dash structure so that the bottom rail will collapse and the column mount is also designed to push forwards. A much better design.

I feel guilty.. nothing more than a scratch from my mini's..

even when I crashed one it didn't hurt me. bless. even when they've caught on fire I've remained injury free.

not to say there hasn't been many skinned knuckles and swearing from bolts which haven't been undone for 20 years suddenly loosening..

touch wood it stays this way.

Note that putting a steering column lowering bracket in a Mini reduces the effectiveness of this safety feature.

The steering column in my Moke did the same thing, not quite as bad as that one, but bent like a banana.
