I was interested in making up all new hydro pipes, fuel lines, brake lines etc for my car and wanted to know what sort of pipe flarer i need..

i have heard there are double flarers available, and a mate reckons for a good pipe flarer somewhere around $300...

Do i need a single flarer or a double flarer and as long as it says its for mild steel should it be okay???

What sort of price should i expect to pay (i dont think my mate knows what he is on about), any personal experiences from purchases or good brands recommended, Bad/poor quality brands Pm me.

I picked up a double flaring kit off ebay for 30 dollars. It did every line that needed to be done on my car including the 3/8th hydro lines.

I forgot to grease the thread in the tool before I used it (those cheap chinese threads ruin pretty easily) so I did some damage first up, it was replaced and this one worked perfectly (this time I made sure I lubed it up completely with moly grease).
It's still in good nick and I reckon it would easily do the job over and over again. You can get single flare tools from supercrap, but you need the dollies that come with the double flaring variety to complete your flares.

Don't be fooled with the hydro lines, they are single flare at first glance, but are in fact collapsed double flares (the double flare is folded back in on itself to make the sealing surface double the thickness of the tube). Easy to do.

I purchased a kit from a tool store and found it didnt work very well on my brake lines. So I gave up and measured the brake lines and then had them made up at the local friendly brake shop.

I bought a flaring kit from Coventry's and it works fine.

It's fully manual & you have to perform a second operation for the double flare (after you've done the first flare) but I wouldn't be without it. Can't remember the price but it was nowhere near $100 let alone $300 :shock:

The first one with the auto gripping pliers attached might give you problems, and the whole tool is stuffed if it does. I tend to shy away from a low quality integral tools such as this (as this is less than 50 dollars I will vouch it will be low quality metals), as one feature will depend on the rest of the features working together. If it was name brand and know, that would be another matter.

The second tool imho looks a better option as each part is generic and can be replaced independently, but you will get this kit for a much better price very easily. As I said, I got mine for 30 dollars, it has done everything I have asked of it so far (once the thread was greased) and they only get better from there.

My brother offered me a long loan of his Snap On branded double flaring kit, but the cheaper one has worked so well I didn't see the point of complicating things...
