Is this caused by weight transfer and distribution?? I cant really change the hydro system for dry nor do i want to, If I were to put the coilovers in the rear what effect do you think it would have? I cant think of to many other options

Cheers Phill

Forget coilovers in the rear, that is just silly talk. How about rubber springs as well as keeping the hydro.

Big rubber blocks between the trailing arm and the body.

... otherwise known as competion hydro rear bumpstops, they are actually Aeon rubber springs. Also used as bumpstops on rear of MGB.
About $70/pr including the brackets.
p/no C-AJJ3313.

see http://www.minimania.com/web/Item/C%2DA ... Detail.cfm for pic.

Hi Phil,

When are you going to add some updates to your Web Site ???

I am interested in seeing your "Electric Mini Conversion Journal" - hope you get some time to update the site.

Cheers
DICK

Phill

As with most new projects you will not get the answer you need as no one has tried it. My vtec mini that is my every day car has a similar problem when I have four people in the car. At the start I used the watsons coil spring in the front in place of the doughnuts they where a 16mm dia wire coil spring, soon found them to be to soft,[later changed to 19mm dia wire ]
At the rear I still had hydro just connected it left to right and pumped it up. This turned out to be very sh\\\\t even with the helper springs and comp bump stops. At the moment the rear is now replaced with dry cone ie hi lows 16mm dia coil springs [came from a jap mini halfcut] and standard shocker,.this is really good with just me my wife and my son he is 60kg.So I think with 150kg you will need to replace the doughnut with an 18mm spring.
if you go for coilover shocks you would need to strengthen the towers in the boot as the 150kg will for sure rip the tops out.

sorry there is no easy way.

mini regards

peter d

Is this what you are using??

If i were to use these wouldn't I have to change the sub frames to dry ones??

Thanks Phill

Changing the subframes would be the easiest way to go, yes.

I would try the competition bump stops first. Like the Dr says they are Aeon rubber springs. They are not just a chunk of rubber on a bracket, they are a specially designed variable rate spring.

But another option would be to convert to rubber suspension as this will save a bit of weight and the rubber spings on a Mini are a variable rate that increase with load. (Hydro bags are also a variable rate spring)
You could easily adjust the level of the car with Hi-Lows. The variable weight will work well with the different weights of the electric motor and the battery packs.
The down side is that you get the harsh ride of a rubber suspended Mini.

Using coil springs will just create a whole range of new problems, Look at the photo of those coils and see how little amout of spring there is. How do you know what rate spring to run, if you load up the boot will the springs be able to handle the load.

Hi Phill Yes that is the sort of thing I am talking about, and yes most people change the complete frame because you need the trailing arms with the long studs for the shockers to bolt on.My concern is as I said in my first post I think you will need 18mm wire dia to hold 150 kg.or a lithium battery to reduce the weight. We have a fellow messing around with springs here in vic I will see what he is up to, maybe he has something we could try.

mini regards
