was there ever such a beast as a Clubman Delux - were any cars badged this way and if so from when to when?

There was no clubman deluxe though the Leyland Australia Paint chips I have feature the "model" super mini for a trim level , maybe the deluxe name was referring to the trim level of the clubman S or something but not an eactual model ?

No Clubman cars were badged as Deluxe.
But the Parts book refers to the YDO22 (Clubman) as the Deluxe in one section.

Do a Google search on "mini clubman deluxe" and you'll find several references (see the Carpoint price guide). Doesn't prove there was such a car named by BLMCA but throws some doubt. Was there a Deluxe in the UK Clubman range?

There were two models of clubman sedan ,one refered to as a standard saloon , (long g.lever, dry susp. cntr speedo, plainer trim , no door window moulds .etc ) known as a (mini 1100 ) badged as this on the boot , the deluxe version had hydro, remote gear change , temp gauge , uper crash pad , better trim , underriders , etc although not ever badged as such :? i once had one with the dealer details typed in the book as clubman deluxe . and once in the mid seventies had a std clubman with it typed (by the dealer ) i think it was lancastor mtrs in the passport to service book as clubman standard these were early seventies series cars with 1100 engines , i hope this helps :)

Mini Clubman range when introduced in 1971 was three models: -
Mini 1100 - base model (fleet buy, etc)
Mini Clubman - better interior, etc
Clubman GT - you all know that one, right?

1972 introduced Super Mini - aka Mini Clubman S. Only ever badged as Mini Clubman with red S badge on the boot and grille (see Issue 12 of TME), but in advertising and brochures often referred to as Super Mini - and on such things as the paint swatch I guess - parts books?

1973 Clubman and Clubman GT discontinued. Name change for standard model to Leyland Mini. Super Mini became Leyland Mini S.

As far as I am aware there was never a Mini Clubman Deluxe.

I was looking at an article about south african mini's and they mentioned a mini de luxe built by leyland being released in 1972..

I thought you may have been talking about in Australia, so let's look at overseas.

The Mini range in the UK in 1971 consisted of Mini 850, Mini 1000, Mini Clubman 1100, Mini Clubman 1100 Estate and Mini 1275GT. Oh yeah, and the Mini pickup and van were still available.

In 1977 the range for sedans was the same. So, no Clubman Deluxe in the UK.

According to Ryno Verster's book on the Mini in South Africa (www.minisa.co.uk):

In South Africa the Mini was released in February 1960 and was available as standard and Deluxe models, in both Austin and Morris marques.

The Deluxe continued through to the end of production in 1978. Throughout this time the Deluxe was always a round-nose version of the Mini, even though it variously had Australian doors (exported to South Africa in CKD form) 998cc and 1098cc engines and went through a number of minor facelifts and specification changes. According to Ryno, "During this period its price more than doubled...However, until the end of its production, the Mini Deluxe maitained its status as the cheapest car available to the South African motoring public."

In June 1978 two special edition Minis were released - the Mini Deluxe Special and the Mini Clubman Special - so they were two different models. There was no Mini Clubman Deluxe, or Mini Clubman Deluxe Special.

BMC South Africa became Leyland South Africa in 1968. The Clubman range was released in August 1971, and continued through to 1978. The range of Clubman models included the Mini Clubman, the Mini 1275 GT, and Clubman Estate. Later came the Clubman Special and the Mini GTS.

Incidentally, the 1275 GT used the same side stripes as the UK version, while the GTS was differentiated by using stripes very similar to the Aussie Clubman GT.

The Mini Deluxe, which was always a round nose, continued through the Clubman era.

So, that has got Australia, UK and South Africa covered, and all without any Clubman Deluxe.

The Clubman was not built in Italy - the Innocenti factory staying with the round-nose until they produced their own Bertone-design hatchback versions - the Mini 90 and Mini 1300. So, no Clubman Deluxe there either.

Now, to be honest, I'm not sure about the other manufacturing/assembly plants - Spain, Chile, Canada, but I would suspect the same applies.

This is the definitive South African Production timeline from 1972 onwards as Watto just said they did have a Deluxe model but it was a round nose, for me the most interesting model is the early model Mini GTS the most powerful production mini ever made, 0-100 in 11.8 seconds. there seems to be only a few remaining original left and not a lot of information. Now the little information I have is, compared to the UK, Australian and Innocenti 1275 model of the same time, the Mini GTS was apparently 20 kgs lighter and had a slightly taller first and fourth gear ratios and the castor and camber was different as well. Dont quote me on this , as this is not confirmed information.

The clubman name was alsso revived around 1996 for the Japanese market , they were basic Mayfairs from memory but Rover felt they needed a different name for the Japanese . They were still normal Rover round nosed bodies but with the clubman name .

WOW , that means the clubman was made by Morris , Leyland , Rover and BMW ....
